His team does have a better record, but he has a better supporting cast that Owens does at BC, IMO.

Maybe he has a better supporting cast (mcCowan) than owens, because he makes everybody around him better and that is the bottom line. Would you rather have 35 points a game and have people say you do not have a very good supporting cast or average 15 points 11 rebounds and 4-5 assists a game and make everybody around you better . Also everybody around McCowan makes him better. You do not hear that from boyd but you will from Russell

Vanhoose is Lofton? Are you serious? The kid is good, but Lofton is another level.

That's not a tell of who the better players is. Maybe better team but not better player.

No matter how many shots he has taken, Owens and Vanhooses shooting % is very close to one another, it is just a matter of Owens having to do more for his team. He also avg 4 assists per game,and it could have been more if his teammates would have caught some passes from him that they just weren't used to getting in the past.

 

 

Shoulda Coulda Woulda. Vanhoose averages 3 assists a game and could have averaged 10 more a game if he had Kobe, Shaq, Tayshawn, and Garnett as teammates. What is Owens % inside the arc? Vanhoose is, I believe, 65%.

I guess the first question I have is who makes this decision on player of the year.

 

If the Ashland Daily Independent has anything to do with it, it is Vanhoose's...hands down.

 

The ADI has Boyd County one and done and the Lexington Herald Leader has Boyd winning the Region....Quite a bit of difference there.....

 

Oh by the way for all you guys to know...The Lexington Herald Leader is picking Boyd because they said all the teams were a toss up, but they were Picking the team with the Player of the Year, which they said was Owens, by far.

 

 

I hate to burst YOUR bubble, but it's just an opinion. I myself, would hold a local newspaper's opinion more creditable than one 110 miles away. But that's just me. I does show that this region is totally up for grabs. Boyd is very capable of winning regionals but they are also capable of not even making it to Morehead. I know a lot of Boyd people doubt the character of this team, I for one do not. I think they COULD win it. Some BC fans don't.

I will go on record and say Boyd County will not win the region, not even close, and is it just me or did anyone else notice Ashland had a much easier time guarding Owens in their last meeting than they did guarding Vanhoose the other night? Although Owens did torch Ashland in the first meeting, it looks to me like Flynn found the adjustment for Owens, he couldnt find it for Vanhoose?

I readily admit my prejudice in the matter of choice of player of the year in the 16th region. This prejudice comes as a result of living in Cougar country. Even allowing for that though, I believe McCowan to be the best choice for player of the year in the 16th and I use reason above emotion in making this choice. First of all, McCowan understands the game of basketball thoroughly, he is the consummate team player who takes little pride in personal accomplishment, and he has excellent stats which are not confined to any particular area but include field goal percentage, assists, rebounds, etc.

The majority of shots that he misses during games are 3 pointers, therefore decreasing his shooting %. Yes Owens can fill it up but on how many attempts? Blake may be taking more high percentage shots (around the basket) but in the long run hitting more high percentage shots on fewer attempts is alot better than having to shoot more shots to fill it up. Blake also is able to lead his team with strong defensive play and good offensive distrubution of the ball. My pick Blake!

Owens just is a little better athlete and carries his team out of necessity. He gets my vote, although Vanhoose and McGowan can each make a good argument.

I wasn't trying to prove a point, I was just curious. I didn't know what the % was and I just wanted to know. That's all.

Good question? It's harder to guard Vanhoose in the sense that you can be in his grill with a handup and he'll still make the shot. Owens isn't as tall nor as good a shooter to be able to do that. I think that Thomas is just as athletic as Owens and thats why he was contained more than Vanhoose was in their matchups.

Huh??? Why didn't he just slam it in their face? Like I said earlier I belive Owens will win POY, but you aren't doing him much justice with your post.

There is a nice article in the Daily Independent today about the 16th Region POY Candidates.

 

Is that the same ADI that predicted Morgan County by 20+? Kinda question their credibility after that, don't ya think?
