There's no good way to answer this without offending a lot of teams.

 

In December I thought HHS was god-awful - intramural-esque.

Lately? They've been better. Beat my beloved Cougars who have played pretty well down the stretch.

So there are positives and Coach L has gotten them to a better state.

 

With that they beat Newport to get to the region so while I'm happy for them to get the chance to participate in a fun experience they , again, just had to beat a Newport team that I've NEVER thought was very good and plays a style that produces points for Ethan but doesn't win games.

 

Does that mean they've "turned the corner?" There are different ways to measure that which is why I asked the question.

I think the corner they turned was going from a team that would likely lose a game to a mid-level NKY team like Newport to a team that would likely win that game now. No, they probably can't beat the Top 5 teams in NKY but they could beat the 6 thru the 12 teams and they should beat the bottom teams. At the beginning of the year that was not the case

That is my assessment as well. Rome wasn't built in a day. I guess the opportune word is in the right direction. There is talent in the system and the kids having fun. I was also glad to see a large HHS crowd and student section!!

Until a Ross Neltner or Derek Smith walks in the building the program will likely be shooting to compete with 6-10. You just can't compare with programs that have 5-6 on Avg basketball only kids like NCC, CovCath, Dixie, Holmes, etc

Clyde - really enjoy reading your commentary and agreed turning the corner at any program or campus is ultimately measured in W's and a team playing better March 1 versus Dec. 1. But it is much more; it is really about the culture, leadership & the intangibles as it is the W's.

 

Turning the corner is hiring a young professional teacher that is as impressive in the classroom as he is on the hardwood. Turning the corner is watching the passion and love this young coach shares with ALL his players and vice-versa.

 

Turning the corner is the confidence and intelligence this young leader shares openly and comfortably in conversation with anyone and the buzz he creates when he engages with the entire student body. Turning the corner is hearing comments time and time again from other coaches on campus or colleagues and players time and time again: "you should see his practice drills, sets and convictions.."

 

Turning the corner is watching a senior player bounce around Coach Listerman AND to & from the gym like he's fallen in love all over again.

 

Turning the corner is having families in the community openly hoping Coach Listerman not only turns the corner, but settles somewhere along Fort Thomas Avenue choosing to raise his family there, much like Coach Kenny Shields decided to do when HE turned the corner as a young man from St. Thomas in 1975 and settled-in.

Bird Bath used the phrase turned the corner in reference to the basketball program. I think that is a stretch based on one district win over a Newport squad whose best win this year is over this same HHS team.

 

Highlands has two bad losses on the season - Walton and Holy Cross.

Highlands has two nice wins on the season - Conner and Ryle.

Highlands got blown out by the two best teams on their schedule - NCC and CCH.

Highlands blew out most of the teams they should have - Dayton, Bellevue, and Bracken.

 

 

HHS has turned the corner toward respectability for this season. No matter what happens Friday night against NCC, they are not a "free square" in the regional draw. They will not be favored against any of the other seven qualifiers, but are not a team that can be looked past either.

 

AS Q said, for the program to turn the corner and contend for regional championships HHS will need some year round hoopsters like the other Ninth region contenders are packed full of. Next year the cycle continues with no returning varsity contributors playing year round in lieu of playing football or golf as their summer/fall priority.

That's why I asked the question. Everyone measures "turned the corner" differently.

To be completely technical, I think they have turned "A" corner, not "THE" corner.
