Parker Harris 22/15 is awesome to hear, he is a top notch kid who works hard and has a great basketball IQ. Buten providing the big-time SR leadership hitting the big shots when they needed em in the 4th.

He recently cracked the starting lineup and I like his game. In the limited games I have seen he plays within himself but is aggressive offensively while providing pretty solid defense. Cain, Harris, Weyer all will be expected to carry the Birds next year and all will have a lot of Varsity experience. Harris and Weyer played a lot as Sophs.

Back in January Newport jumped out to a big early lead and kept HHS at bay the rest of the game. Parker Harris had one of his quietest games of the year. Newport cruised by double digits.

 

 

Last night, completely opposite. HHS got the early lead - extended it to double digits just before half. Left under 5 seconds on the clock for the Wildcats to streak down the floor and hit a 30 ft runner by Turner to cut the halftime lead to 9 (HHS had fouls to give but did not use them and Turner made them pay). Similarly at the end of the 3rd qtr. HHS had the ball holding for the last shot, went too early and Price went coast to coast for a 2 pt goal as time expired. Two mistakes that the Birds overcame, but need to be cleaned up if they are to win a close game.

Nice job Birds. Your reward is NCC Friday night, but more importantly the opportunity to represent your school at the BOK next week. NCC is a bad match-up for 95% of the schools in the state. It is the worst possible match-up for HHS.

Snapp was definitely in the zone in the early goings. I think at one point he had 18 of Newport's first 24 points. One of his 3's was released from near the parking lot. He was feeling it and those early shots were pure and pretty.

 

Turner's buzzer beating 3 at the end of the first half was awesome and much needed to cut the lead to 9 going into the locker room keeping their hopes alive.

 

The Birds hung tough and responded every time they needed to to keep their lead alive and well. They weren't going to buckle and their fortitude was impressive.

 

This feels like a corner turner for them and a confidence builder heading into the district championship came with NewCath. Tall order for sure, but not a bad practice game heading into the the Regional tourney. Can't hurt and can only better prepare them for what's ahead.

A couple of legend spottings in the house last night. None other than Coach Ken Shields supporting his Birds.

 

Also grandfather to Bird's Brandon and Austin Hergott, Coach Tom Hergott who was Scott Draud's pre-Highlands coach while he was still a grade schooler developing his amazing form. He won't brag on this little known fact, so I'll brag it up for him.

 

Exciting district tourney action was in the air and in full form.

 

Sounds like I missed witnessing a couple of "upsets" in the 33rd. With Cooper and Boone getting most of the 5th and 6th votes all year, looks like Ryle and Conner are out to prove that nothing is for certain heading into the 9th Region tourney.

Ethan was impressive he hit threes with in the gym range! One point of reference play and finish through contact. A few times he asked and did not receive CCH Nick R treatment. A couple of shots around elbow, no contact bad acting. Snapp has a great shot no need for whistle help. Super soph will learn.

Congrats to Coach L and the boys on a job well done. Malachi were you in the house? Never mind. The boys were ready to play and executed the game plan prepared by the coaches to near perfection. Parker Harris had the game of his career to date and all others that played were real solid. I really like how Drew Houliston handles himself on the court. Never gets raddled and lets the game come to him. As many have said, BB is the oil that greases the wheel for this team. As he goes they go. Another nice game by Mitchell Cain. From what I understand, the Bird bench was calling out the Newport plays even before they started running them. That right there is very good preparation by the coaches and players alike. Now they need to show up tomorrow and play with the same effort and intensity and see if they can give the Breds a game. Either way, a goal has been reached and can serve as a stepping stone in getting this program back to where it used to be.

Well said! The program has turned the corner and the seniors set the table. BB leads the troops and Parker had a breakout game! In a class move Coach L thanked the JV players with their effort in practice and I think it showed in a complete game!! New Cath will be a tall order but they are going to be tough on anybody in the region as that is atop tier program in state. With a good draw HHS might be able to catch lightning in a bottle next week! Good luck!!!

Agree with Stinky Boy II, Harris played his worst game of the year against Newport the first time they played. He got into foul trouble that game and played the fewest minutes of any game all year. Team played the most complete game of the year. Their were a few mistakes late in the game and a few bad shots at the very end when the clock was on their side that they will need to clean up. Everyone contributed. Besides Harris, Weyer, Buten, Houliston and Cain all made 3 pointers. And several came at important times in the game. Got to give it to Snapp. The kid can shoot. He made some bombs. One of his shots had to be from 30 feet out. He needs to get some meat on those bones to help fend off the double teams which will be coming the next 2 years.

I was wondering for 2 of Highlands games where Coach Krauss was, and found out he was scouting Newport. He really knows his basketball and he is in Listerman's ear the whole game. HHS doesn't have to win tomorrow night, they just have to able to hang with them to get enough confidence going into the Region. They need to be within 10 going into the 4th quarter. New Cath is tough.

Well all I know is that they practiced Newport's plays since last week.
