CVS to stop selling tobacco products

Featured Replies

Someone once told me that alcohol was close to 50% of sales at one of the local pharmacy chain stores.

That doesn't sound right, but I honestly have no idea.

No doubt they will survive. Just curious as to what will make up the 2%

They'll raise the price of ED drugs. Boom, surplus made up.

I'm curious, does this fall under religion, ethics, or philosophy?

"So I'm guessing they will be dropping candy, soft drinks and snack foods as well?"

Not a chance.

It depends on the location.

Thier front end pricing is already higher than Walgreens and Rite Aid.

I don't get why anyone should take issue with this. They're a business....If they want to stop carrying a product, they're well within their right to do so....:idunno:

100% agree they can sell what they want. Just a head scratcher on why.

Noticing a trend here, none to fond of CVS eh?

I have called on the drug channel for several years. Selling CPGs to all 3 of the top players. Walgreens is a class act. A little expensive, but offer a good deal on sale.

Rite Aid is very difficult to deal with, lots of erroneous charge backs, retail margins are very high.

CVS is hard to call on, lack of communication, lack of execution and the highest retails of the 3.

I could do without the 2 northeast based chains.

Same item retail price

Walmart .97

Walgreens $1.29

Rite Aid $1.49

CVS $1.79

I have seen multiple items that vary in price dramatically from company to company at least from the consumer end. Generally speaking the three pharmacy chains are almost indistinguishable from each other most of the time. Some items are higher and some are lower depending on where you go.

Now from the merchant end, that is a different story I have no experience on that end of it so I can't speak to that at all.

Isn't it safe to assume that all four aren't paying the same cost?

Not a safe assumption! .83 is cost for each of them. Fact.

That would put WalMart's margin at less than 15%. Very surprising for any retailer to be that low, especially when their competition is much higher then that.

Three Charts Show Why CVS Will Halt Tobacco Sales | New Republic

This was interesting. Basically argues that Caremark/CVS is shifting toward providing primary care at "urgent care" type clinics. “We are retooling ourselves as a company,” Brennan [Chief MD at CVS] said. “How can you continue to sell tobacco when you are part of the health care system?”

Welcome to my world!

This item is used as a 'loss leader' and I would not really call those 3 drugs stores their direct competition. Mostly an impulse for the druggies.
