Newport Central Catholic 67 Newport 40 in 9th Region All-A Final

Featured Replies

Newport came out with a game plan to spread the floor and it worked well as NCC was just not into the game defensively and had no excitement.

NCC swapped out one of the bigs for another guard and picked up out on the floor in the second quarter and eventually pulled away. Newport never quit just had trouble getting any kind of offense other than by driving to the basket.

I guess a 27 point win in the final is okay but might have been the worse NCC has played in a long time. Inside game had many missed layups and 3 footers

The Moeves that was MVP was the real deal and defensively was quite good along with the scoring.

Tanner Moeves played as well as you could at both ends. Missed a couple lay ups but defensively did a hell of a job on Snapp. He finished with 24 points in the win.

Schulte, McDonald, and T Moeves (MVP) were named to the all tourney team.

As for the crowd which was mentioned in the other thread. Nowhere near Sold out. Not even half-way sold out. 3 of 4 sections on the NCC side were maybe 75% full and the other maybe 25%. Newport side maybe 2 sections in the middle maybe 50% full and just a few people in the other sections. No cheering student sections, fans just kind of quiet after the first quarter.

I think the weather and the threat of cancellation earlier in the day and the parking (which was cleared off fairly well) and maybe a potential webcast and maybe fans thought the best two team met last night.......maybe it all led to it not being a huge night.

Was a small crowd projected which led Dayton to pull the plug on NKYsports? If so , I get that.

I think a lot of people including myself thought that this would be a NCC blowout and that is another reason for the lack of people there.

Has any team besides CCH gone the "face guard Pangallo" route this year? I would. He's the key to getting the offense going. I want their shooter to have to run the offense instead of being set up for good looks.

Sounds like Snapp struggled to get going. That's to be expected when you're THE offense and you're facing seniors and you weigh a buck 40. Strength matters somewhat. He'll get there .

He picked up 2 quick fouls (as did NCC's Weyer) and had to sit a little but Newport had to put him back in because they have no set offense and were getting all their points off driving and dishing. NCC did a good job staying on him and the NCC guards blocked a few of his shots.

Defensively Newport was not giving anything up easy inside and NCC probably missed more shots inside 5 feet than they have in any other game this year. Most of their points came from outside 3 point shots or steals.

In addition to NCC players, Price and Turner from Newport on All-Tourney, Noble from St. Henry. Sorry do not remember the rest.

NewCath downs crosstown rivals, wins All 'A'

Newport Central Catholic completed a dominating romp Saturday while repeating as Touchstone Energy All "A" Classic Ninth Region boys' basketball tournament champion with a 67-40 win in the final against Newport.

The tall and talented Thoroughbreds ran past their outsized district and city rivals with an intense performance at Dayton High School that earned them the opportunity to repeat as All "A" Classic state champions.

The Thoroughbreds, ranked second in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, won four tournament games by an average margin of 35 points, and earned their eighth small-school regional crown in 11 years, 12th overall.

They will play Owensboro Catholic in a 1 p.m. Thursday first-round state tournament game at Frankfort Convention Center while seeking a third small-school state title.

NewCath (16-3) will head to Frankfort as a hot team after winning its ninth game in a row and halting a three-game winning streak by Newport (11-8). The Wildcats had won three in a row and eight of nine.

Helping the Thoroughbreds get there in a big way was 6-foot-8 senior center Jake Schulte, 6-7 junior forward Drew McDonald, and shooting guard Tanner Moeves, who knocked down shots while locking down on Newport leading scorer Ethan Snapp.

Moeves sank a pair of 3-point baskets, scored a game-high 24 points, and held Snapp to eight, 12 below his average of 20. Without their catalyst's scoring punch, the Wildcats were limited to 14 second-half points, equaling their first-quarter total.

Schulte scored 13 points, and McDonald and point guard Zach Pangallo had seven each. McDonald averaged 18 points a game in the tournament.

NewCath's post players, including Ben Weyer, combined for 25 rebounds and five blocks while changing shot selection and trajectories on those attempts they didn't swat.

Northern Kentucky has produced the past two small-school state champions. Holy Cross won in 2012. NewCath coach Ron Dawn, in his second stint with the team, is looking for his second crown. He guided the 'Breds to the 2000 state title.

VIEW FROM THE SIDELINE: "We won, but I'm hoping that when we go (to Frankfort) that we do what we're supposed to do, because we didn't do that in the first half, and they stayed with us," coach Dawn said, "In the first half, everybody kind of did their own thing, except for Tanner. He stayed with what we were doing and did a heck of playing defense and hitting shots."

Said Newport coach Rod Snapp: "(Ethan) kind of took himself out of the game because he was frustrated, but Moeves did do a job on him."

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Moeves, always a quality scorer, has become the 'Breds defensive stopper. "Defense was my No. 1 priority today. We wanted to limit (Snapp's) touches and keep him from getting the ball, but I thinking knocking down shots helped," he said.

QUOTABLE: "Snapp scored 27 points (Friday), but I felt like Tanner was physical with him and kept him from getting on fire," said Schulte.

PLAYS OF THE GAME: There were eight tie scores and lead changes in the first quarter, but a trey by Moeves gave NewCath the lead for good at 16-14 with 20 seconds to go in the period. The 'Breds opened the second quarter on a 12-4 run, a trey by Moeves putting them up by eight.

FIRST-HALF HIGHLIGHTS: Moeves scored 14 points as the 'Breds took a 35-26 halftime lead. He held Snapp to one first-half field goal and four points.

ALL-TOURNAMENT: MVP-Tanner Moeves, Jake Schulte, Drew McDonald (NewCath), Paul Price, Mike Turner (Newport), Jacob Huff (Beechwood), Carl Matthews (Dayton), Hayden Molitor (Lloyd), Jarrod Howard (Ludlow), Matt Fryman (Bellevue), Jared Bockweg (Villa Madonna), Daniel Vargas (Heritage Academy), Zach Wehrman (Holy Cross), Jordan Noble (St. Henry), Tyler Schreiver (Covington Latin).

!00% correct Frank, but have to give credit to Coach Snapp and the Wildcats. They came out with a great game plan and it was working to perfection, but the were simply "out-manned" in the long run. With all the missed "easy" shots, the Breds should have won this one by 40 or more.

Tanner Moeves did a great job on both ends of the floor, he does a excellent job of driving to the basket and has great speed. The "D" on Snapp was outstanding.

Had Dayton not approved the broadcast as stated on the NKYSports.com website then there would be no issue.

If I request and inform the host site that we would like to broadcast the game and receive approval, jump through all of the hoops to make that happen and then have the plug pulled on me, then I'm upset.

Congrats to Tanner!

Another year marked another All “A” 9th Region title for the Royal Blue and Gold.

The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds handled the in-town rival Newport Wildcats, 67-40 for the crown at Dayton on Saturday. It was not as close as last year’s region title game at Bellevue that NewCath had to hit a good amount of free throws down the stretch to pull away.

The defending All “A” state champions have won eight region championships in the last 11 years and 12 overall since the tournament started in 1990. NewCath (16-3) also won the state tournament in 2000.

Newport had no answers for senior Tanner Moeves attacking the basket. The tournament’s Most Valuable Player scored 24 points.

Thoroughbred posts Drew McDonald and Jake Schulte also made the all-tournament team. Schulte had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.

NewCath plays host to Highlands (3-9) on Tuesday in a 36th District contest. The Thoroughbreds open the All “A” Tournament on Thursday at the Frankfort Convention Center against Owensboro Catholic at 1 p.m.
