What about Abner?

 

Mick Abner? I'm guessing that's who you mean. I'm not so sure Mick thinks he is qualified to take on such an important role in Highlands Football. I for one wouldn't think twice in asking Mick to think about taking the job. I overheard a friend of mine a couple weeks ago saying that he talked to Mick and Mick joked about the multiple emails and texts that he has received, telling him that he should apply for the Freshman position.

 

When Mick graduated High School in 1988 he joined the FT Thomas Junior League coaching staff in 1990. At that time there were only 2 teams that played in the NKY Middle school league. He helped coach along with Highlands new head coach Brian Weinrich, the Ft Thomas North team to 2 Championships and 1 runner up in the 4 years that he coached before being ousted by the one and only Tom Duffy. Tom thought he could do better by bringing in his own peeps to run the show.

 

Fast forward 15 years and Mick was asked by Merril Hoge to be on his staff at the 7/8th grade level. He coached under Merril for 2 years before being named the head coach in the Junior League. I think Mick even went to Canton Oh with Hoge in 2011 to help coach the USA All American team. Mick has been coaching a Junior team ever since and from what I see & hear, he absolutely loves it. Mick is very important piece of the Junior League and I do know that they would miss him dearly.

 

Mick comes from a long line of family members that have played for Highlands. A friend and I joked a couple of years ago about the Abner family being the 1st football family of Highlands. It seemed like every time you turn around there is an Abner playing Highlands Football. Which is a good thing!

 

My question here is, would Mick have full control over his Offense that he runs. With Weinrich running the show now, would he require Mick to run only certain sets that the Varsity runs? I do know that I have sat in the corner of the stands at David Cecil on any giving Sat and watched Mick's offense at it's best. I have seen Mick run a wide open spread offense at times with success and then the next play he pack it in with an overloaded line with 2 tackles on one side of the ball to inject a little Smash Mouth football. I'm sure our friends down in Raceland would appreciate that term.

 

Whatever Highlands decides to do with the hiring, I'm sure they will make the right decision. If Mick isn't the man for the job, then the Junior League wins again. Which isn't a bad thing because Mick is going teach the kids some life lessons and get them ready to play Freshman football.

Didn't realize Mr Dowling had a change of heart. He has been to a few workouts from I was told. If the job is open, Coach W needs to reach out to someone the kids will relate to and someone that will be around for a long time if all goes as planned.

 

Mick Abner would be a great hire if you ask me. Someone with passion not only for the game but for the community and school as well. Not that Brady isn't or wasn't, whichever, but Mick kind of takes it to another level. He is also in a good situation with his work to make it happen. Would love to see it happen.

So do we know for sure that Dowling has now decided not to be the coach or are we speculating because someone saw the job listed on the school website?

I heard the same thing yesterday about Mr Dowling turning down the Frosh position.

 

For the Frosh level at Highlands the youngest Abner kid would be a great choice. He has quite a bit of coaching experience and has been taught well

This was sent district wide to all faculty members yesterday. By judging the Posting Start date, I'm guessing Mr. Dowling decided not to take the position. :idunno:

Highlands/Ft Thomas had 2 teams in the League. Highlands North & Highlands South. Basically they were part of what's now the Northern Ky Middle School League. Sorry If I confused anybody.

Wow. Now we have guys quoting themselves. I hear that Kevin Shoupe and Peter Coughlan might be looking into these positions. Seeing as how they prefer someone that is already on staff at Fort Thomas Independent Schools, how does this impact young Abner?

A tangent to the topic: Duffy was the one that requested that the Jr. Football League "shut down" the 7th/8th grade division and put two teams in the Middle School League. I was the President of the Jr. Football League at the time. Duffy had a say in who the coaches were for those two teams from the beginning.

I guess the same way it was followed by the young Behymer. Is he a prefered employee of the FTIS? And the reason I quoted myself was to clarify what I said in my original post. It was a matter of time when someone would of said, it's very easy to win when there is only 2 teams in the league. Geeez, lighten up. And would you indorse the Shoupster and Creepy Pete to the Frosh staff.

I'm guessing the School as would any, would like their guy to be from "staff". But it's been done before. I think the current 7th grade boys basketball coach is not on staff. Do the preferences stay the same for middle school as do the high school? Either way, hopefully they get somebody soon so he can start connecting with the kids.
