What Richard Sherman Taught Us About America

Featured Replies

"Last night, when Richard Sherman went on his rant to Erin Andrews, most of America thought they were learning about the arrogance of another NFL player. But in reality, what Richard Sherman did was teach us about ourselves. He taught us that we're still a country that isn't ready for lower-class Americans from neighborhoods like Compton to succeed. We're still a country that can't decipher a person's character. But most of all, he taught us that no matter what you overcome in your life, we're still a country that can't accept someone if they're a little louder, a little prouder, or a little different from the people we surround ourselves with."

I didn't know anything about his background, his college degree and in no way thought he was a "Lower-Class" American. Not knowing the history between the two players and just seeing his interview I did think he came off as arrogant and was being a poor winner. Now under the light of 48 hours when all of the stories were told what he said and did isn't as big a deal.

I'm offended that the writer of that article is assuming that he is a Lower-Class American, which would be based on nothing but his appearance. Most fans watching the game wouldn't have known him if he was sitting in their living room watching the game with them. So the only thing the writer could have based his opinion of America's opinion would be on how he looked during that interview.

I didn't get that perception at all from the writer.

I love how e erything always has to be turned to racism. The writer is a joke and so is the premise that because people thought Sherman came across as a jerk yelling about another player like a mad man in a post game interview equates to "America isnt ready to hear from somebody from Compton"

What a load of crap. I didn't know nor did I care where Sherman was from or his background when he went off on national tv.

Quit with the racism crap already, being a jerk is not limited to any certain race.

I don't think most NFL fans were upset or shocked or anything to be honest. Geez the guy at least confined it to the play on the field and did not use profanity. He also did not put on a gold HOF cape, he did not give the football CPR, he did not use the pylon to putt the football, he did not leap into the opposing teams fan base.

Really, he says that "He taught us that we're still a country that isn't ready for lower-class Americans from neighborhoods like Compton to succeed." Who was calling him a lower class citizen? Why does he think that America sees him as a lower class citizen?

Maybe I'm taking it wrong, but I feel the writer is as guilty as he is accusing everyone else with that ridiculous statement

Quit it taking it personal. That article was for the people who labeled Sherman a thug and the people who took the twitter to throw racial epithets at him after it happened. Not to mention that you'll never understand what it is like to be a black man in America and to be judged for things that white people aren't judged on.

All I can do is laugh at the outrage. I grew up watching every Ali fight, listening to his interviews....you guys are really blowing this out of proportion. Shove a microphone in my face after I win a battle with my IT department and I'll be just as "classless and disrespectful". :lol2:

You sure? This is thread #3 about Richard Sherman.

You are 110% correct.

Its just another writer who thinks he can speak for the rest of us to try and make some political point.

why does everything have to be race related or political. Am I the only one who saw an NFL p,Ayer act like a jerk in a post game interview? When I saw his actions after the play and heard his following remarks in several interviews I never once thought

1. He must be saying the things he's saying because he is from Compton.

2. He is only yelling into the mic Because he is black

Get real people.

No. You are a prime example of the inability for some white people to understand black people. If you can't understand that the outrage over this is so overblown and that race does play a part then you are just as blind as the black people who only voted for Obama because he is black.

Take your head out of the sand so the dialogue can progress.

No. You are a prime example of the inability for some white people to understand black people.

Actually what you don't get is everything isn't race related. You act as if Sherman was white no one would say a thing about it. You are wrong, it didn't matter that he was black, if he was white he would still be getting slammed about how he acted.

You ever heard of Ryan Leaf? He was white and got slammed all the time with things he said.

If being black means everyone should ignore what is said in the media because he is black, then that is a cop out.

I don't understand black people...lol, that is sad. You may be right, if everyone is supposed to treat black people different than everyone else, instead I tend to treat people the same no matter what race they are.

Why is so much attention being paid to this? He didn't curse, wasn't vulgar....what is the big deal?
