Maynard has already informed the Raceland Administration that he will be returning for the 2014 season.

 

Firing the coach that he admires more then anyone would not bode well in luring Maynard to the job.

I think so, but stranger things have happened. There is more to him excepting that job then just changing schools.

I would expect McPeek to apply, but Matney applying would be interesting to me.

If I was a coach and I had several offers I might take one somewhere else where the administrators aren't idiots who screw over a coaching legend and the whole staff. Im not moving my family all the way out to Russell if I have to worry about administration that cut a legend might do to me. Simple as that. Plenty of openings at other places.

He's had multiple health issues. There's little chance he can coach for much longer to be honest. You can throw the administration under the bus if you want, and I totally understand that sentiment, but some would have only been satisfied if coach McGlone passed away on the gridiron. I respect coach McGlone greatly, like everyone else, but to say that the next coach won't get support, Ivan's been there at that school thru multiple presidents, multiple generations of kids, whose kids, and grandkids have played for the Red Devils. I think his support from the administration was incredible considering his tenure. And to be quite honest, it sure seemed like coach was putting up quite a stink and wanted to make it clear he was fired. Considering he was so beloved, and had so much respect, could he not have simply had no comment about it? Just stepped away to allow the program that has employed him, named a field after him, and honored him for decades to move on without groaning? I know that's not a popular opinion, but I think it may have a different feel now had he chosen to go that route instead of his method and remarks.

The question is, What kind of return am I going to get on my investment? There is no way to know the answer for sure. So then we have to look at the risks involved, the risks that would keep me from getting the return I expect. If those risks were greater then I am comfortable with then the decision is to move on and mitigate those risks. If those risks are acceptable, then I stand pat. Obviously the decision was the risks at this point are more than Russell is comfortable with. If I have high risk and I have a good replacement right now then it is in the best interest of Russell Schools. Same reason Joe Montana became a Chief and Peyton Manning is a Bronco.

Considering the way that Ivan McGlone, his long time asst. coach/coaches were treated by the Russell administration and "some" fans / parents ....the Russell administration may have trouble finding someone to fill that spot. Someone will but a great job just became questionable. jmo

If they hire from outside, the job has to be posted for 30 days. I would guess they have conceded that they will not hire from within. I'd say we will hear something in a week, give or take a few days.

First off, welcome to bgp RussellSports :thumb:. That question may have to do with one thing that some applicants / potential applicants may be considering is what I was saying before. At least a thought has to run across their mind that if they (Russell Admin.) would out right fire a long time legendary coach after the man had put Russell football on the map, made them not to mention his W/L record over some 38 years or so and a couple of State Titles in 3A and 2A -- Then will they do the same with me after just a short while ?

There is an old saying about replacing a coaching legend, especially in this case with it being controversial and the fan base split......"A coach doesn't want to be the coach that replaces a legend, you want to be the coach that replaces the coach that replaced the legend".:idunno: . The 2nd guy will not be under near as much scrutiny. jmo

Thanks. I am not from Russell and would be of the mindset that change is something that is needed at times to make us all better. With time this will seem as no big deal. We need a coach with ambition to do more than the past and that will be difficult.

I agree with Spindoc....Sometimes it is better to retire gracefully, no matter what you may think of the situation. Legends want to be remembered as legends and what they built. Not by causing a big stink about how it went down, in their eyes. One word "CLASS"

When the new coach steps in, he will have a LOT of talent to work with. I have seen what they have coming up, from peewee to freshman. Impressed

Any word on this? Seems very quiet in Russell-Flatwoods.
