ST. HENRY (8-6): Plummer 3 6 12, Goetz 5 1 13, Wallenhorst 4 2 10, Noble 6 2 14, Rechtin 3 2 9, Kunstek 3 0 6. Totals 24 13 64.

NEWPORT (8-5): Price 3 2 9, Turner 2 1 5, Covington 5 2 12, Snapp 5 8 21, Joseph 1 2 4, Ochoa 3 1 7. Totals 19 16 58.

3-pointers: SH—Goetz 2, Rechtin. N—Snapp 3, Price. JV: St. Henry, 47-39.

Wasn't one of the Crusaders better performances. I'm sure Newport had a bit to do with that. Lot of missed layups, lot of missed foul shots, lot of not getting back on defense (especially off a made basket).

Newport does play hard the whole game. Snapp will be a nice player. A little too many unforced turnovers and he has a lot of freedom out there but you can see the potential.

That's a good win for the Cru. Great balanced scoring again by coach Faust's team.

This is a good win for the Cru. Newport is a legit top 10 team in the region and could end up being better than #10 by the end of the season.

I have to ask. What makes them legit top 10? Their wins have been against teams with a record of 26-60 and losses against teams with a 55-21 record. I don't know the records for Oyler and Riverview East Academy. So far they do not have a win that they shouldn't have. What makes them more legit than the other teams on the cusp of the top 10?

Walter did say "in the region," so, when looking at teams only in the 9th region, who would you rank above them? I don't think the fact they are "top 10" is as much of an endorsement, as it is an indictment of the talent after 7 or 8.

1.Covington Catholic 100.6

2.Newport Catholic 97.2

3.Holmes 95.6

4.Dixie Heights 83.4

5.Cooper 77.0

6.Boone County 76.7

7.Ryle 76.5

8.St. Henry 76.2

9.Conner 71.4

10.Newport 64.5

11.Highlands 64.1

12.Ludlow 61.6

13.Covington Holy Cross 58.1

14.Beechwood 55.8

15.Erlanger Lloyd

So, is this win for the Cru their signature win of the season so far? Or would that be the Conner game?

After the top 4 teams on this list just roll the dice. Cru could beat anyone on here besides the top 4.Highlands is overrated at 11. Truly Ludlow would smack them and not sure that the Crossbacks and Beechies wouldn't get them also. Haven't seen Lloyd but here they are young and inexperienced.

The implication was that it's a good win BECAUSE Newport is "top 10." Sounds impressive until you view their body of work and the work of the teams that are not top 10.

Having only seen them against NewCath, Sergio Gutierrez for Lloyd is a very nice player but not much after that, and the JV didn't offer much, NewCath JV beat them 53-17. However, was told the Frosh team has a lot of promise.

I can remember when I was in school, Lloyd was a "tough out" in all sports.

Very nice "team effort" by the Cru in this one. :thumb:

I dont think so....after listening to the Brossart loss and seeing them take Cooper to the wire, I am inclined to keep them there. I think they are better than Ludlow, Holy Cross, Beechwood and Lloyd...not saying much but still better.

Cooper may be a little overrated here, Top 8 yes...but Top 5......ehhhhh not so sure.

Who would you put in the top 10 over Newport? Newport has beaten everyone below them that they've played and I'm not too sure they wouldn't beat Conner too. I said this is a good win for St Henry because Newport is a good team, regardless of what other posters on here say who haven't seen them. They have some really nice talent in the sophomore and junior classes.

What makes them more legit than other teams on the cusp? Better talent...plain and simple.

No need to get so defensive. It was a question only about the word legit as if there is no discussion among the other teams. I guess I should have added a disclaimer - I wasn't saying they aren't top 10 or not because after the top 3-4 it is mostly a toss up.

I want to see them beat a team they aren't expected to beat before I think they should be higher than 10. My opinion only and means nothing except to me. ?

Newport rarely gets any respect. Sure, they've had their up and down seasons over the years, and even in their 2010 9th Region Champs season they had to really spank Holmes up real good for anyone to take serious notice, and even then discussion of them fizzled right on out.

I think some even thought that was a fluke, but no doubt they just played 1000 times smarter than the Bulldogs that day and showed them what difference playing as a team for the entire game can make, versus playing full of themselves thinking they got this in the bag.

That whole season I kept singing their praises and nary a person could buy it because it was Newport.

It was evident that in 2009 something was brewing with them, but it got overshadowed by Holmes' excellent season, so no one saw it coming.

I don't know if it's because they're an inner-city school that for many years struggled on the court, and by chance for them in many people's eyes, it takes more proof than most elitist type schools garner praise, to have people believe that quite possibly they've got some decent game in them. That just might be fine by them, as it gives them perhaps and even better chance to sneak up on someone and nip them in the rear.

Their 2010 season coach went off to Campbell Co, and their present coach Rodney Snapp has an interesting resume as he coached for 10 years at the famed Milan High School in Indiana, where most know was the school that the Movie "Hoosiers" was based on.

Coach Snapp is a smart hard working coach that has intently lead his young squad to play at a higher level than their age might suggest. If this team stays together for the next couple of years, they're gonna be in the discussion, no doubt.

They've got a way to go and certainly can't be considered a top notch team this season, but outside of the top 4, they certainly can play with any team from 5-10. Will they make a serious statement before season's end. Hard tellin'.

Playing close to St. Henry should speak volumes though that they're nothing to sneeze at.

Remember Newport lead at half by a small amount. When St. Henry played Dixie they too were right there with them at half until the Colonels dominated in the 2nd half.

I think that people have this perpetual idea that Newport is always just gonna be a bit pedestrian when it comes to giving them any true respect.

Go ahead and keep thinking that way, and they'll just have the last laugh.
