Dang electric bill

Featured Replies

So I open my electric bill a couple days ago. I had not paid my previous bill yet (just procrastination), this bill had previous balance on it and current balance, due date 1/31. Ok, I have a few days...so I thought...bring the bill in to work with me, going to call and pay it at lunch time sometime this week. Girlfriend texts me a couple of hours ago...she's home sick which she NEVER is...cold as heck in the house, no power. What the?!

So I call, find out what's going on and get it paid and why it was turned off. Lady tells me it had to be paid by the 15th. So I ask, then why am I getting a bill saying due by 31st? Ahhhhhh!

Well, something similar happened to me a few years ago. I used to travel for my job more and might be gone 2-3 weeks at a time. Well on one of my trips I had neglected to pay a bill, was a few days past due, and not a big bill, maybe $100.00 or so...they come out and disconnect my power. Geez o Pete! Well, my question is, how in the world do people get 3 and 4 months behind on their electric bill like I hear happens? Obviously that can't happen with my electric company because you can't get that far behind before they come shut it off. Their like the dang mafia.

I opened my bill (which was magically sent 2 days after the big freeze) and it was just over $300.

I know people that never pay their electric bill until they have gotten 2 or 3 threats to turn of their electric, they are usually a month behind every month. I don't know how they do it either, on side note, was everyone past electric bill extremely high. Most everyone I know last month's bill was higher than any from last year. Is gas cheaper for winter and in the long run?

Sounds awfully quick to me. But, honestly don't know what the exact ruling is.

This is something that I found on the internet.

Utility Shutoffs and Disconnections in Kentucky | Legal Aid Network of Kentucky

Looked at the link, and this is what got me: From site

•Warns that the shut-off will occur even if a new bill is sent.

They had sent a notice in bill form, AND sent me a new bill...the new bill is what I saw and opened first, which is why I though I had time to pay it, as it indicated the 31st as a due date. Very confusing.

Here's a couple of things that stood out to me, from the link.

In almost all cases, any utility company that intends to shut off service for any reason must mail or take to the customer, at their last known address, notice that:

•Is in writing and is apart from any bill;

•Gives the reasons for shut-off;

•Tells the customer they have a right to appeal;

•Warns that the shut-off will occur even if a new bill is sent.

Gas and Electric Companies Must:

•Mail written notice of termination at least ten (10) days in advance;

•Not shut service off until at least 27 days after the date of the original bill;

•Include with the notice information about heating assistance programs and a phone number for the local office of Community Based Services.

So, to me, you should've gotten something else in the mail a little over a week ago, (besides the bill) that would've stated their intent.

I opened my bill (which was magically sent 2 days after the big freeze) and it was just over $300.

That's rough.

That's rough.

Those are the little things they don't tell you when you buy a house. I feel like I get nickel and dimed to death.

Just pulled mine up, it was $129 last month, this month $266. Thanks mother nature!:no:

What do you keep your thermostat on? Would gas heat be a cheaper option? Friends of mine that have gas heat say so.

I'd like to keep it on 68 but my better half refuses to leave it there so it's usually on 70. There isn't natural gas where I live so I'd have to go propane but I can't imagine it'd be any cheaper. I just put a brand new high efficiency furnace and heat pump in two years ago. I also replaced the roof and windows this summer. I'd have hated to seen the bill if I hadn't.

I can't complain too much. I have 6-8 months out of the year where it's less than $100.

And I don't have a better half so I generally live under survivorman rules.

This is how we heat our home and our water.
