January 17, 201412 yr If you are on heat pump make sure you are getting about a 20 deg rise without the auxiliary. If your only getting 15 or less then the refrigerant may need to be checked. So if its set to 70 you should get around 90 coming out of the vents. Also its best to keep HPs at a steady temp. If you have programmable that adjust the temp once or more a day it causes the auxiliary to kick in. If you have electric for auxiliary it will kick-in and drive up electric cost.
January 17, 201412 yr Just pulled mine up, it was $129 last month, this month $266. Thanks mother nature!:no: Mine doubled on my just received December bill also!! Good news (hopefully) is that I upgraded my attic insulation everywhere from ~R19 to over ~R45 during the last week of December. I felt better about that investment after the December whopper bill...I am hoping it makes a difference.

We just moved into a house with an electric heat pump last fall. We had natural gas before, and I like it better....felt warmer and was cheaper. In December, I noticed my auxiliary heat was on a lot, and we still weren't getting to 68 or 69 degrees where I keep the digital thermostat. I called our HVAC guy, and there was some kind of part burned out which he repaired. The auxiliary is not on nearly as much now so I am optimistic that we are operating more efficiently.
