I concur. But when looked back even further it was also GOP in '60, '56, and '52. Something changed.

How am I not being consistent?

Sorry, I didn't word that correctly. When I said "I think you need to be consistent", that was supposed to be directed to everyone, not you specifically. Maybe I should have said, "I think people need to be consistent"

I thought about that first part.

Went back and looked and since 1992 California has gone to the Democrats.

However prior to that year, the GOP candidate took the state in '88, '84, '80, '76, '72, and '68. What happened? Going by that data the Dems have held CA for 6 elections but the Reps held it for the 6 prior. interesting state that CA.

I think California Republicans tend to be similar to many rural KY democrats. They tend to be very centrist and are not the norm of their parties. Similar with Republicans in the Northeast such as Mayor Rudy, Chris Christie, etc.. Chris Christie's view on guns is more along the Democratic line than many Democrats in KY. Case in point the goof ball who shot her gun in the Capitol building while clearing it.

Nixon was a favored son of California, he was on the ballot for President in 60, and as Vice president in 52 and 56.

Hispanics were 12 percent of California's electorate in '98 and 20 percent in '12. That's 8 percentage points more in just 14 years. Demographics.

Yep. The growing population of "minorities" is a huge reason for the swing.

Hollywood was movie Mecca long before. Just as debauched then as now. Society was more conservative then. See Oxford, Selma, and McCarthy for examples.

But hasn't Hollywood always leaned pretty liberal? Just as society has shifted from being more conservative in the past, Hollywood has continued to shift left also I believe.

They shift more than the San Andreas fault line.
