Which defense do you like against a team known as a running team?

Featured Replies

Sound off.

I like 3-5 and 4-4 but I defense would be a 4-4 with a nose tackle over the center and a dt on the strong side.

If it is a team like a double wing or slot t where they are run 90% of their plays, I would run a gap 8 defense. If it is a team that has more balance, I would go with a multiple 50 defense to give me flexibility to attack the run game.

I have always been a 50 guy for high school football. I contend that exploiting a high school center when ever possible is something that you want to do as often as possible.

But, to the question, I think a 53 with a true two gap nose tackle would be ideal.

With the four front you want to run, teams would abuse you on the backside because you have two open gaps or bubbles for your linebackers to fill. Three gaps if they are double tight with your DE in a nine tech.

Gaps covered with your best linebackers.

For you 50 guys, over or under?

Multiple 50 so I will go both over and under. Depends on our keys from film study- we get a strong side key or a tendency or if we know we can force an audible that we like, we'll go over. Also need to look at field vs. boundary runs- may cause us to flip flop between over/under front as well.

Just depends on who I have on my roster and who I am playing.

Same here.

I am shocked how many teams are strictly over or under but never both/multiple.

I want a six man front, with my ends being lineman fast.

My 2 backers would have to be studs

My corners fast and able to tackle

My safety would have to be a stud

You could play any defense with 2 fast DE's, 2 stud backers, great tackling corners and a stud safety.

5-3 against the run.

3 man fronts don't work against good running teams.

That alignment isn't sound at all. Unless your guys are just that much better you would get gashed.

Honestly there is no where near enough information to truly answer the question. The other thing is why change your base defense. Just saying a team runs the ball a lot is pretty open. That could be wing t, double wing, flexbone, and even spread (Auburn is one of the top rushing attempt teams).

Historically many would go with the old okie dog pinch.
