I hate to ever agree with ukfan but the even front with a 3 technique and a shaded nose weak is Chuck Smith, Brandon Smith, Larry French, and Larry Mofields defense and last time I checked they are pretty stout against the run.

I like a four man front, but not with 4 backers. While it can help you prevent teams from getting the edge, it is also susceptible to the big play. Your corners are on an island, 1 safety creates problems not only defending the pass (even running teams throw the ball some nowadays) but also stopping the run should the back break to the second level. Teams that like to spread you out also create a lot of mismatches and open gaps. You need very stout DT's and extremely athletic backers to make this D work.

 

I'm a big fan of a base 4-3. It's flexible and adaptable enough to work against any type of offense. If a team likes to run, just walk a safety up and play cover 1. If they like to throw, add an extra DB and play cover 3 or cover 2. You can easily adjust coverage to bring more pressure with your LB's, and adjustments are very easy against spread type offenses.

That is pretty standard. ukfan's post wasn't real clear and almost made it sound like the 1 and 3 were on the same side.

 

30 fronts are funny because if your TEs and such aren't good at blocking in space the off tackle hole because a cluster. But once again this really depends on what type of offense you are running.

 

53 depends on your rules. Do you reduce the front? How do you handle coverage? I love unbalanced twins against a 53. If they don't reduce in some way then they pretty much waste their 9 tech against certain formations
