The Hobbit was the first legit book I read in its entirety, without cliff notes ; ). The "cartoon" movie was a classic back in the day. Some of you may appreciate this:

There was another animated LOTR movie that came out at about the same time, directed by Ralph Bakshi. Went about halfway through the trilogy, and the next installment was never done.

^ Absolute classic. Every once in a while I'll still catch myself humming "The Greatest Adventure".

I guess I'm in the minority, I've never seen a Hobbit or Rings movie. I guess the story lines from what I know of them just never seemed to fit my taste.

 

I thought the same thing, in fact when I went to see the first Lord of the Rings movie at the theatre I felt dooped because someone else bought my ticket and I thought we were seeing something else. I love all of the Lord of the Rings movies. VERY well done.

 

I honestly just watched The Hobit on Tuesday(really enjoyed it), will probably go see the newest addition in a couple of weeks once my little bro is back in town for the holidays.

I love all things Hobbit and LOTR. I don't mind at all how long they are. Every Christmas I do a marathon of the trilogy and now I'll add in "Unexpected Journey" and hopefully next year "Desolation." I'm jealous of anyone who gets to see it. None of my friends are into it, so I either coerce someone or go alone...or wait until it is released on DVD. :lol2:

Nothing wrong with going alone, I did it Monday night. Enjoyed the movie and thought the scene with the barrel chase was awesome!

Going to see movies solo is actually rather enjoyable. I've done it a handful of times, and always enjoy it.

I agree, I don't understand why people are so against that idea. I find it peaceful.

I'm looking forward to seeing this one, just not sure when I will. I was happy to see that Evangeline Lilly (aka Kate from Lost) was in it.

 

Watched the first one over the last two nights again to prepare.

 

Evangeline Lilly is not very nice to the Orcs in this movie. She's quick as lightening and wicked with a bow and sword. And a good looking addition to the story as well.

I just watched the second Hobbit movie. I have read the Hobbit and the LOTR trilogy at least 20 times.

 

Her character is not even in the book.

 

Legalos is a High Elf, the wood elves are Sylvan Elves they did not coexist. Legalos was also not in the book.

 

The Orcs did not track the party to the wood elves fortress, and there was no fight with them to get out of it. In fact, Bilbo had sealed the dwarves in the barrels and the elves put them in the water to float down to lake town. The elves didn't even know they had escaped until it was way too late, and had no idea how they escaped.

 

Bard did not rescue them and take them to lake town. The wood elves and the men of Lake Town traded goods. The barrels were collected by the men of Lake Town and lashed together with the dwarves hidden safely inside, then they were taken to lake town by the lake men. Where Bilbo freed them in the night.

 

Kili was not wounded and none of the dwarves stayed behind. In fact all 14 of them set out for the Lonely Mountain on pony together. That was a big part of Smaug's conversation with Bilbo.

 

Gandalf never told the party he would meet them at the overlook. He left them at Mirkwood because he had other business (the Necromancer) and said he would look in on them again if he could, but this was not his quest.

 

No one spoke of the Arkenstone until after Bilbo had found it. Bilbo didn't know what it was when he found it. Once he did find out what he had, he kept it secret because Thorin seemed obsessed. They speak of it constantly in the movie. Bilbo didn't even find it until Smaug was already dead.

 

Smaug has no clue that Bilbo has the ring in the book. Bilbo never takes the ring off for Smaug to see him. Bilbo stays totally in hiding. Smaug cares nothing of a darkness coming. Dragon's are arogant and care about nothing other than themselves and gold.

 

The Orcs did not come to Lake Town, and there was no fight with them there.

 

The Dwarves didn't do any sort of battle with Smaug in the hall. Smaug had left and was dead when any of the dwarves entered the hall for the first time.

 

Needless to say, the she elf did not cure Kili since 1. she was not in the book, and 2 he was not wounded by an orc.

 

Bard was never put in jail by the people of Lake Town. They didn't really like him, but they respected him. He was of the direct line of Girion, the king of Dale.

 

This movie is quite possibly the most horrible departure from the book that I have ever seen. As impressed as I was with the LOTR movies, I am that disappointed with this.

I read the Hobbit as well and realize a lot of what happened in the movie didn't happen in the book, but I thought it made the story quite a bit better adding a lot of this. Honestly I found the book a little boring. I didn't read any of the LOTR books, but love those movies as well.
