I don't understand why any really good coach or high profile coach would even want the Texas Job.

 

They are horrible, they basically ruined their conference and forced A&M and Missouri out and to the Sec. Their boosters are so egotistical it's a joke and those se idiots run the program, not the AD or coach

 

That job is a very bad choice for any really good coach.

I still say Chip Kelly is who I would go after, especially with the success he is having in the NFL right now. This NFL season is just giving him more credibility with recruits, and diffusing negative recruiting against him saying his ideas and schemes do not translate to the NFL.

I say Charlie or Coach Franklin.

Forbes has a list with the top 10 coaches in any profession. 8 of the 10 are in the NFL. At least 1/4 of NFL head coaches make more than Saban does, even after his newest deal. NFL coaches don't have to spend tons of time on the road recruiting.

 

NFL coaches deal with adults, not adults/children. If you fail in the NFL, you can always go back to college game (and probably have the same most of the same options to choose from). NFL teams have sponsors, owners, the league office, and a player's association; College teams have Presidents, Boosters, Parents, High School Coaches, and the NCAA.

 

Coaches have egos. Who would really think the average coach would be satisfied leaving the NFL for college and winning 3 straight titles. The next question would always be when you were going back to the pros or why you left. So many reasons pro coaching is considered more desirable than a college job.

Was really interested in the responses I'd get, but so far I haven't gotten any. I posted on Facebook, for all my friends who are UT fans to see:

 

"Texas fans only: would you be happy or plssed if Texas hired James Franklin from Vanderbilt?"

 

If I were a UT fan, I might think there are better options, but there are definitely worse. If it were me, I wouldn't be wildly upset if he were hired.

 

The more I think about it, the more I think Texas needs someone young and energetic to inject some life in the program.

I disagree- keep in mind that Mack Brown was very successful until the last four years when he didn't recruit a great QB. Texas is a premier job- you'd have a great recruiting base, great salary, winnable conference to get into playoff, the Longhorn Network and largest athletic budget in the country.

 

Powerful boosters have influence, but no more than any other high profile football program.

Texas is a premier job- you'd have a great recruiting base, great salary, winnable conference to get into playoff, the Longhorn Network and largest athletic budget in the country.

Something I think people really underestimate is what a GREAT academic institution the University of Texas is. I don't necessarily agree with all of their policies, but it's a top rate school.

I saw the acceptance rate was around 46% which was much lower than A&M but higher than Baylor.

The "travel" is a non factor at Texas. First the head coach at any major program doesn't hit the road much unless it is on a high priority recruit and that is usually a case of trying to seal the deal. Second the travel is even less at Texas where all you have to do is recruit the state and you are golden. With that said, it HAS to be someone with deep ties to the states talent bed. Strong and Franklin would be huge risks there as they aren't deeply connected to the state...

Their acceptance policies are B.S. in my opinion. There's a "rule" that if you are in the top 5% of your high school, you get automatically accepted. Texas is a huge state with some really rural areas. Have a friend from Houston whose parents run an engineering firm that NASA outsources to. He's on Dean's List at our law school. But he went to a stacked high school and probably didn't get a great look from UT.

 

Same time, a kid from middle of nowhere South, East, or West Texas, and they're in because they're top 5% of a school. Even more points just for being Hispanic (there's that whole lawsuit going on).

 

Really is odd when kids in places like the burbs of Houston are getting in some other big time schools, but not their home-state UT. That's just me though.

 

I understand the intent behind the rule, but at some of the premiere high schools in the Dallas or Houston areas and you're looking at an Ivy League type scholarship, not UT.

 

All of this is coming from someone who went to what would be considered an "underperforming" high school, but put it in Texas and I'd have been in UT over a ton of kids who were way more qualified than me.

 

Want in UT? Move your kid to a bad high school and they'll get a free pass. Want in UT but still want to send your kid to a quality high school? Hope they're overqualified if that's where they really want to go.

I've seen where some folks are speculating that the Eagles Chip Kelly could be a possibility.... NFL not everything he'd hoped it would be. I must say it would be hard to take over in Philly and have the team struggle. While the coach that was let go/you replaced moves to another team that had one of the worst records in the league last year and now has one of the best records in the league.
