Are things changing in Ky HS football?

Featured Replies

2013 has been a very different year than most.

1) No T or X in the 6a title game

2) No NKy Titles

3) No Central, No Highlands, No NCC

4) Belfry's finally a bride and not a bridesmaid

5) New powers making there presence known ( Wayne Co, Desales, Collins, Scott Co)

Is this year an anomaly or should we look for similar things like this in the future?

What Collins has been able to do in their short existence is amazing. I have to believe they will build upon this. I do think things are changing in 4A and I think its good for KY high school football.

Those that think what Collins has done in a short time do not understand where Collins is from. They are and will be a great program no question. One has to understand who they are. The history and the make up.

Please tell us.

I think Collins will get even better, Belfry has been there and done it; definitely not a doormat to anyone regardless of the streak of Central, Trinity and St. X will definitely be back along w/Highlands, New Cath, and others. From another point of view, I believe things aren't going to be as easy for anyone as many have anticipated. The only team that I see being the king of their class of now by a long shot is Mayfield in Class A; the rest of the classes will remain competitive for the most part.

10 years from now, Collins will be the Highlands of the State. They are built for success.

I think Wayne Co may be overtaking Bell Co, who's been one of the dominant 3a programs in that area. Bell will still have there years, though.

I don't see anyone on the 4a west side that'll challenge Collins, maybe Owensboro on occasion and maybe S.Warren, as they look to be moving up in the next realignment.

Desales looks like they're not going anywhere and may take over the 2a dominance that NCC has enjoyed the past few years.

Teams like Scott, S.Kenton, Meade, McCracken look like they may be cutting into the gap of X and T. But, T and X will remain the team to beat on an annual basis.

BGreen is on a great run, but, I do expect they'll come back to the pack some in the coming years. They've had a few great classes recently.

South Warren will in all likelihood jump all the way to 5A. No, the great challenge Collins is about to face is John Hardin in their region. Warren Central is moving down to 4A as well probably.

I agree Collins will remain relevant but they lose a ton of 3 year starters and several D1 players. May not be as dominate next year.

Everyone seems to be forgetting that after 2014 several teams will be in a different class. Makes the predictions a little trickier. For example, will Mayfield enjoy success? Well might depend on if they are in 2A and if NCC, Beechwood, Desales, Somerset are in 2A or if none of them are in 2A.

I'd be surprised if Mayfield isn't in 2A for the next alignment. In 2012-13 they were 35 males above Fort Knox which projects as largest 1A school, and 31 above Beechwood which would project as the smallest 2A school. Beechwood may or may not be in 2A, just depends on their enrollment this year. NCC and Somerset aren't going anywhere. DeSales currently just above the projected cut to be in 3A, as are Bardstown and CAL. Caldwell County and Monroe County both just below the cut. But the point is well made, re-alignment will have a lot of impact on future.

I hope you're right about Mayfield and Beechwood moving up. But, if they do, I also hope you're right about Desales..lol

Well most are assuming some things for the next alignment that may or may not be true:

*Six classes

* Using Male Enrollment only

* 32 only in A and 32 only in 6A

* Teams not allowed to move up except for geography

*Teams will be allowed to be in a class and count in that class but opt out of district play

We really cannot accurately predict where teams will end up until we know more about how they will be placed in the classes

*Six classes (I think it has been made clear by the KHSAA that they like 6 Classes as do most coaches it would appear)

* Using Male Enrollment only (I would be surprised if this changes)

* 32 only in A and 32 only in 6A (Could possible change)

* Teams not allowed to move up except for geography (Geography will likely be the only reason for moving up)

The only one of those I see possibly changing is the 32 teams in A and 6A, and that's just because of the problems it caused when teams split or consolidated. But I'd be floored if they changed it at least in 6A, because this year aside, they've basically made it clear that they want the impact Trinity and X have on other teams minimized. Some teams have to be trapped with them, and I believe they've made every effort to minimize that.

On the team being counted in a class but opting out, I believe that's how it is now.

Like Ram, I see almost no way any of the others change. Every survey indicates support for six classes and I've long since given up hope that will change. Male enrollment makes sense because they're the only ones that factor in the sport outside of exceedingly rare cases. And they made geography the requirement to do away with the nonsense of people trying to duck other teams (which some still laughably tried).
