It didn't look like Alabama even knew the guy could return the FG if it was short. And why do you need Max Protect against 10 people rushing instead of 11? Bama didn't even realize the kick was short until Chris Davis was at the 10 yard line. They weren't prepared to stop Davis or anyone who was back to get the kick. It's not like Auburn didn't rush the kick so they could set up a wedge for Davis. Bama wasn't ready for that play. And that's Saban's fault. Hell, he didn't even know what was going on. :lol: :lol:

 

You have a kicker and holder and because of protecting the snapper you pretty much have 3 guys on the kicking team that do not/cannot block for the kick. Add on top of that you know there is pretty much no way in the world they will fake it and it is a matter of overloading a side.

While it hasn't been a game winning TD this has happen a number of times in the NFL the last few years. I don't care if the FG team was just FBs, TE and LBs. Give Auburn credit. They saw the FG team and called time out to get the kid back in case they missed. Also while some of the guys celebrated they did form a sideline return (since a FG return is much closer to a PR than a KOR).

I agree. When Auburn set up to return the potential miss Saban should have not even tried it.

Neither was worse imo. A coach knows his team better than anyone else and no disrespect intended but certainly better than anyone on here. Saban and Hoke are both very good coaches who's records speak for themselves. Had the coach not thought that his decision was the best one for his team then he wouldn't had called what he did.

I also don't believe that people overall are giving Auburn or Ohio State any, or enough credit for what they did. Both were on the road in the most hostile environment they could be in, both Auburn and OSU had potential BCS NC game possibilities on the line.

I am not putting any one person's opinion down but just think that too many aren't giving the winner credit for making the plays they had to have. Both OSU and Auburn and their players, coaches Won their game and not bc Michigan / Alabama just blew it. Both were beaten by a better football team "On That Day".they made the plays, Bama didn't and that's what matters. I certainly feel that Bama is a better football team than Auburn but they weren't on Saturday. Ohio State has been much better than Michigan all season, Michigan took it to them and at the end Ohio State made the play/plays they had to make, Michigan didn't.

Alabama's choice had the least chance of making it but in 99 out of 100 times the worst result is OT. Michigan's choice was crazy in my opinion. You have 50/50 odds at best and the worst case result is a loss. I thought Saban made a decent choice on the road.

50/50 odds at best? I disagree. It's 3 yards. If you can't get three yards on a play, why should I believe you would fare better when you need more than that in OT? I'm a big believer on winning and losing on your own terms. Yes, if you don't convert, you lose. But if you get it, you win. One play, three yards, to knock off a team that hasn't lost in two years? Yeah, I take that shot.

 

My comparison with the Alabama decision is that I firmly believe every team has a play and players to gain three yards, even though the other team might defend it well enough to stop them. Not every team has a kicker who can be trusted to make it from 57 yards. There are many NFL teams that don't have a guy that can make it from 57 yards. And some of those NFL kickers leave the ball short as well, so you know a college kicker might do the same. Add in the fact that Auburn had already blocked a field goal during the game and you have to know you're taking risks. I maintain Saban made the wrong choice from the word go - he should have taken a knee right away because the odds were much greater that something bad was going to happen as compared to something good.

I had no problem with Sabans call but I would have if he took a knee. For crying out loud, at least chuck it into the end zone, you'd have enough speed on the field to prevent a return as opposed to the FG.
