Duck Season

Featured Replies

Any of you cats go? We went this morning and hunted the Ohio River above the Greenup dam. Good grief there were a zillion ducks. We killed 19. Mostly mallards. Killed a pair of wood ducks that I think will be permanent residents in the home and headed to the taxidermist. Killed a black duck, bufflehead, canvasback but no geese. They didn't want to play the game this morning. 17degrees when we shoved off. Happy, Happy, Happy.

All I know about Duck hunting I learned from Elmer Fudd and Duck Dynasty. Is there a limit to which species of duck that you can shoot, are there some that you can't? If so how in the world can you tell which species they are when they are flying past you?

Well, frankly, I thought the same thing. And it's funny, after you do it for a while you can tell mallards from woodies from buffleheads. It's a little hard, but it gets easier. There is a 6 duck limit per hunter and there's a combination of which species you can shoot. 4 can be mallards of your 6.

This reminds me of the wolf that was killed and the hunter thinking it was a coyote.

I was past treasurer of ducks unlimited, gave up my role because of other interests and I don't own a boat and I was not invited to go with those that did own a boat.

How does it remind you of the wolf thing? Curious.

Sorry, when I saw the title to this thread, I just could not help myself! No disrespect to my fellow hunters intended.

That was when cartoons were cartoons Jack. Love it.

I've never tried duck hunting. Always wanted to but around here you have 3 options, own land, fight the bazillion people in the public slough, or spend a small fortune to get in on a lease.

How close are you to the river?

Henderson is on the Ohio and the green runs through the eastern part of the county and dumps into the ohio. Honestly I've never heard of the ohio being much good but have heard of people having good luck on the green.

Well, in this duck dynast era, everyone has decoy spreads and a thousand calls. Frankly, I don't own either. We hunt the Ohio River and the Little Sandy River in a 16 foot duck boat with a 20 horse yamaha. We jump shoot them and it's a riot. I have friends who will kill 5 or 6 decoying them and letting their retrievers go get them. We generally limit out. It's a riot. It's like grouse hunting without having to walk.

As a matter of fact, I left the kid in my avatar back there with my best friend because I had to work and they limited out again today.
