Did These Georgia Tech Fans Go Too Far?

Yes disgraceful

I saw fans in ###### one night wearing KFC Buckets on their head in a game against Austin East from Knoxville...don't remember the score but seems AE put a beat down on them.

I also saw even worse than this committed by students at my own high school when I was in middle school. Back around 78-80, luckily a lot has changed since those days.

Worst thing like this I've heard of going on was a high school game at Corbin against OBI in the All-A Classic. Corbin had students waving nooses and confederate flags. Yea… they weren't very subtle.

It amazes me that a group of kids like this would collectively think something like that is cool.

Every one of them should have been suspended.... Unbelievable.

Doesn't surprise me in the least, and ironically, I have a strange feeling we are talking about the same school.

This is nothing new with them. Had a friend in college tell me they were shaking hands before kickoff and some kids refused to shake one of their captain's hands. Yes, the person left hanging was black. Par for the course in incidents involving Corbin athletics. I know you can't stereotype an entire town, but I'm really shocked at the amount of ugly incidents that happen there.

It is not cool at all. But I hate to fully draw a conclusion as to their intent. My guess is Georgia Tech has a predominately black team so are they all offended? If this costume collection was in attendance say at the Virginia Tech game, would any person say a word?

I think the problem is that they pulled this out against one of the traditionally all-black schools. I'm sure they would say they were just being goofy or something along those lines but it's hard for me to believe they didn't do it to poke fun at the other team.

Yep. This was in 2003, so it was before fans having smartphones with cameras capable of getting stuff like this on film was prevalent. Considering the explosion of smartphones and how things go viral on social media, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if we're hearing about Corbin having some incident that's gone viral unless something has changed.

If one person has a camera phone and tapes something like that and sends it to a news station or something similar, there would probably be heads rolling.

I'm also going to take your "unbelievable" as a sign that you've never been to Corbin and aren't familiar with it. I'm guessing that if you were, you'd be saying "doesn't surprise me".

Not trying to stereotype the whole town or anything, and everyone there isn't like that. I have family in Corbin myself who attended Corbin High School. I will say that on the whole, the town has somewhat of a reputation as being pretty racist.

So we can pull out the gorilla outfit against teams that are predominately black, but not those exclusively black? And I am not disagreeing with anyone that it doesn't look bad and it makes me feel uncomfortable. But I am not going to leap to some conclusion that labels people in a costume I've seen at multiple sporting events as racists just because it is a historically black college. If that is the case they need to just ban the costume all together.

Well it certainly has nothing to do with Yellowjackets.

Well it certainly has nothing to do with Yellowjackets.

Nor does Spiderman and he is at every UK game. :lol2:

Has anyone ever seen the Yellowjacket mascot in person? Wimpiest costume in college athletics.

I believe those guys dress like that for every GTech game...

Now if that's the case, I'll change my mind.
