October 23, 201312 yr I'd be shocked if he got less than $10M....Hell, the Reds are pretty likely to make him a qualifying offer, which would be 1 year @ $14M so they can get the comp. pick. I don't agree with that either. They are worried he'll take it. I agree. The Reds can't risk a qualifying offer on Arroyo. The best he can hope for from any team is a 2 year deal and who really knows if he will get offered even that by anyone. How long did Kyle Lohse sit this year before being signed? If things head that way for Arroyo, he will snatch up that $14M and stay with a team he likes in Cincinnati.
October 23, 201312 yr I can agree with that. I have no interest in trading Cueto, though. Sure he has struggled to stay healthy but when he has been on the hill he has been one of the best in the bigs. I'm not willing to deal our ace unless the deal overwhelmingly favors the Reds. Just keep him out of Pittsburgh...
October 24, 201312 yr He pitches 200 inning's every year and his "stuff" doesn't drop as much with age as a fireballer. He will definately get more than $10 million a year. Heck, the Yankee's would give him $15 mil just to eat inning's as a #5 starter. The Red's have to offer the 1 year at $14 mil to ensure they get the draft pick.

I look forward to revisiting the topic in a couple of months, but I can tell you with 100% authority, they do NOT want Arroyo back at $14 million.

I'm sure they don't but I'd bet a good amount of money they making him a qualifying offer to get the pick. He's not taking a 1 year deal.

I wouldn't at all be surprised if they work out an agreement with Arroyo where they agree that the Reds will offer him a QO and he'll agree to decline it so the Reds can get the draft pick and Arroyo can go get his multi-year deal on the market.

The only way I make that deal if I am Arroyo is if there is a further contract offer on the table as a back up where if things don't happen in the market, I (Arroyo) know that I can pitch for the Reds again in 2014 if I am willing to accept their price. Think about it. If you are the Reds, would you rather have Bailey for one year at $10M or Arroyo for one year at $10M? If we are saying they can't afford Bailey, then they surely can't afford Arroyo.

That would surprise me, especially given that "deals" like that are: a) frowned upon; b) have blown up in teams' faces a few times in the last few years. A compensatory pick in baseball is not like picking up a 1st in the NBA draft or the NFL draft, keep that in mind. Baseball 1st round picks don't hit nearly as often as the other two.
October 24, 201312 yr Remember that the Reds are paying Bronson this year whether he plays for them or not, for the next few years.
October 24, 201312 yr Remember that the Reds are paying Bronson this year whether he plays for them or not, for the next few years. Deferred money is a revenue stream for teams as they Escrow the money and earn interest off of it. People that mock the Mets and others for deferring money simply don't get it. Had Wilpon not been wiped out by Madoff, that would have been a brilliant move deferring Bonilla.
October 24, 201312 yr If the Reds trade either and Bronson leaves then they either need to get two starting pitchers back (unlikely) or Chapman has to become a starter.
