NFL Panel Recommends Charlie Strong & David Shaw As Head Coaching Candidates

Jurich won't be outbid by any college program. He can't compete, in terms of money, with the NFL.

Both are solid college coaches. What hurts their NFL prospects more than anything is the inconsistent performance of college coaches making the jump to the NFL, IMO.

Might not be more than a handful, but I do see some college programs having the funding to compete with Louisville, especially if you look at the big picture of facilities, merchandising, advertising, etc. If I'm Jurich, I do everything I can to keep Strong though. Whether or not that handful even has an interest in Strong though is another story.

I could see a school like Oregon (Nike), Maryland (Under Armor, old money in Baltimore if they decided to break the bank), Texas (branding), Michigan (facilities), etc. outbidding Louisville if it really came to a bidding war, but I don't see them going after strong, so it's a moot point.

Pretty fair point. It was one of the first things I thought of when reading that.

The only way Strong leaves UL will be for the NFL. If Tennessee couldn't get him, no other NCAA team will be able to. Unless it has sentimental value like Florida.

The NFL caught a lot of flack due to no team hiring a minority coach last off season. I have felt the NFL and these panels look at it totally backwards. They are concerned with the grand prize of securing head coaching vacancies for minority candidates. That is all well and good, but the problem to me is more of the lack of minority coaches at the assistant level thereby increasing the pool to choose from. If you are genuinely serious about evening out the numbers then force teams to hire X amount of minority assistant coaches. Don't get mad because a team interviews 7 guys and the 1 minority candidate is one of the 6 that do not get hired.

Still don't agree with having to be told how many minority coaches teams have to hire to begin with. It's a fine concept but ultimately it doesn't hire the best person for the job in some cases.

I agree. Just stating the obvious problems that exist by basing the entire argument, "are there are enough minority coaches in football", strictly to head coaches, then it will always be a problem. Serious question, are there the same number of minority candidates that look to get in to coaching as white candidates?

There are institutional biases, not necessarily racist biases that exist in all walks of life. This is just another example.

Has Strong and/or Shaw ever coached in the NFL?

I would like the see the following percentages:

1. % of minority NFL coordinators

2. % of minority NFL general managers

3. % of minority NFL owners

I would think there would be about 25 schools in the country with a better shot at landing Charlie Strong than would Tennessee. The Vols have a great tradition, but no real recruiting base and no previous connection to Strong. I know Jurich can pay tremendously, but I'm guessing there are a few more than can match that money. Tennessee isn't one of those schools, though.

In Shaw's case, however, being part of Jim Harbaugh's staff at Stanford would help his perception. Shaw has been great at Stanford and Harbaugh has been great in the NFL. Shaw is very well thought of and respected, and I could see an NFL team taking a shot with him.

If (When) the Bucs fire Schiano, would they give Strong a look? He's a Florida guy, would have the real possibility of bringing Teddy along with him...Could be a good fit?

Maybe the Bucs. But would they be scared away from a college guy when their most recent hire was a college guy and he was terrible?

I understand what you are saying about UT, but there were many (not necessarily you) that thought the first time a "Big Time" program came knocking, Charlie would bolt. He didn't. When it comes to the coaching carousel, I think anything is possible. I would be extremely surprised if Strong left Louisville for another college program, though.
