First, it should make most of you happy to know that federal funding for SNAP is being cut effective Nov. 1.

 

Second, Wal-Mart really should have disallowed the purchases because the system was down. It happened in 17 states, and those purchases were denied by the retailers.

 

Third, what may appear to be an EBT card may also have other funds loaded on it, such as child support payments.

 

Fourth, I'm not sure how you can tell who should or shouldn't be receiving aid, simply by sight.

 

Fifth, if a person has a credit card, that doesn't necessarily mean they aren't needy. And if they are responsibly handling the credit, isn't it better in the long run that they maintain a decent credit score? And isn't it possibly an indication they are getting to the point where they no longer need aid/

 

Sixth, SNAP benefits can be minimal. When I was first divorced and had no job, I received $75/month because there was a child support order. I made 5.00/hr. When I got a raise to $5.25, it was cut to $25/month.

 

I see a lot of generalizations thrown around, and judgements made without any actual knowledge of a stranger's circumstances.

 

I'll be making heftier food donations going forward. The food banks will not be able to fill the gap. My mother gets no SNAP benefits, but she is absolutely dependent on her Feeding America box each month. I take as much as I can to her, and would do more, but with expenses like a new roof, and installing a walk-in shower so she doesn't hurt herself getting in and out of the tub because of her crippling arthritis, I'm cash-strapped myself.

And I agree about the foodbank. Some of the most fulfilling work I ever did was volunteering in our former churches food pantry. Partnered with a local food service and served an underprivileged area to the tune of 175 families a month. It was humbling and a great joy.

Yes, it is theft. At the minimum their benefits going forward should be cut till the overage is equalized.

 

I was just trying to address some of the other generalizations being posted. I did not intend to marginalize the actions of the buyers. I just was thinking of the other points because I know personally that appearances aren't always indicative of circumstances.

Would you agree that the vast majority of those you served were truly needy and grateful? I know some people who appear ungrateful or as if it's their right. But at least some of those people are suffering from wounded pride. And others are simply cranky. :lol: Seriously, my experience has bee that, by and large, the people who receive these food boxes are really grateful.

 

Heck, I remember the year my kids were adopted by the Jefferson Count Sheriff's Department at Christmas. We also received a food basket from the Hell's Angels. I still am moved to tears by their generosity.
