Who says Ohio is better?

Featured Replies

I look at this similar to how I look at how well conferences do in Bowls. Because the top conferences send so many teams to bowls, sometimes their lower teired/just-barely-made-a-bowl teams are playing top teams from conferences from the next level so it often, bowl results can only be used for fun but don't rely 100% on using them to guage how good or bad a conference is. On the same side, to use this info, we may need to gauge whether the KY team is playing similar strengthed teams in OH or are they beating bad OH teams.

Belfry vs. Gallia Academy(AVERAGE AT BEST)

Johnson Central vs. Ironton(NOT GOOD)

Dayton vs. Fayetteville, OH(REALLY NOT GOOD)

Programs not individual teams... Ironton obviously is down this year but they are definitely a quality program

As an aside,, would love for you to shed some more knowledge about Gallia Academy in the prediction thread if you have any familiarity with them.

I pulled off some info from the OHSAA site and will post it in the thread if it isn't already there.

About the same can be said on the programs that lost games from KY. There are good teams on both sides of the ledger in both categories.

I agree with CardinalsFan. I think Ohio overall is better on the big schools and it evens out the smaller the schools are.

Russell, Ryle, Trinity, CovCath and St. X? Year in and year out those are better than average, Top 10 in their class (or in Ryle's case, occasionally), programs.

I'm with you that outside of the elite D-1 programs, pound for pound (enrollment wise), the gap isn't all that wide!

Personally I never bought into the whole one state is better than the other state garbage. Every state has bad teams and every state has good teams. And that's it.

I know very little about Gallia Acad and nothing about Fayetteville, but you don't agree that Ironton is a quality "program" as ATL put it?

They are in a down cycle, especially by their standards, and this year's team may be down, but their program has been very good for a long time.

. They are a average to below average team this year , if one wanted they could still count them as a quality opponent. As y'all stated they are on a down cycle and have been for a couple of years and all indication it is going to get worse.

In reality, Kentucky and Ohio are the same. Kentucky has to top, really good teams. Ohio has the top, really good teams. But, there are more schools in Ohio, so their top teams are greater in number.

Example:

Kentucky 222 teams = 22 really good teams, 50 pretty good teams, 150 not so good teams.

Ohio 700 teams = 150 really good teams, 200 pretty good teams, 350 not so good teams.

Mostly this. Best example I've seen in the thread. I'm not sure Kentucky has 22 really good teams, or Ohio has 150 really good ones, but you have the right idea.

Using Highlands as an example, when they play Elder, St. X, Colerain, or Moeller they are playing WAY WAY up in class. Highlands losing to those teams isn't really an good example of Ohio vs. Kentucky. And, at the top, Ohio is far better and deeper than Kentucky. You get to the round of eight in Ohio D-I and you can look at anyone not named Trinity in Kentucky most years and name the score.

But outside, the elite of Ohio, the state's look the same a lot. In a year Highlands was losing to an Elder or Moeller, they likely would have beaten a Lebanon, or Anderson (then both were DII schools). When Wyoming was really good, really good Beechwood teams would have and I think did beat them. Same with Beechwood over most DIII or DIV schools. NCC would always compete very well with schools it's size on the Ohio side of the river as well.

Ohio's top heavy at the DI level with really good teams. Kentucky is really thin with really good teams at it's largest level. Kentucky catches up in the lower enrollment levels.
