What players are serious contenders for Mr. Football?

Featured Replies

I said on here months before the season began that Houliston was a better QUARTERBACK than Towles or McCoy and people thought I was nuts. Having now seen both play' date=' and a half season under the belt I will add that Houliston is a better quarterback than Barker. Barker is the better prospect based on size and potential. I think Fant wins Mr. football because a lot of people whom may have voted for Barker will have trouble voting for a guy who is not the best at his position............even if he is going to UK. For the record Houliston now has over 1850 passing yards, 24 TD passes, and a 71% completion percentage. Only one pick on the season.[/quote']

McCoy yes, Towels no. Cannot say he is "better."

Prospect or not, I have a hard time believing he's a better QB than Barker-- again, this is even just talking about their careers as high school prospects only.

Flip Barker and Houliston's roles as QBs of their respective teams:

Can Barker do what Houliston can with Highlands' weapons? Yes.

Can Houliston do what Barker can with Conner's weapons? Not sure.

.

He's not a better QB than Barker. He throws a pretty ball but in comparison to Drew, his ball lacks zip and his release is very long. He does throw a beautiful deep ball because lack of zip and a slow release do not hurt that throw.

Now does that factor into Mr Football? Who knows. It's an easy call though who is the better QB(and I think "Houlihan" is a strong high school QB).

McCoy yes, Towels no. Cannot say he is "better."

It depends on how you're defining "better" as a QB. He's certainly not the athlete that McCoy was. He doesn't run as well as McCoy. I don't see much of a talent gap between him and McCoy.

He's not better than PT.

Well you kinda answered the question, Houliston is the better QB, McCoy is the better athlete.

I can't use your scenario with flipping QB's at schools. If "Houlihan" lived in Hebron, he attends Covington Catholic and well if Barker lived in Ft Thomas he wouldn't be attending Newport Catholic. He plays at Highlands! I just think there is a certain program that has a reality "Tim Couch" like situation coming to Boone Co in 2014. Hope I'm wrong.....

I think at one point years ago Highlands was a possible landing spot for Drew.

What is a "Tim Couch" situation?

You might have noticed the all caps QUARTERBACK. I am not sure i know exactly how to define it, but, to give you the best analog yin a way that everybody understands I will try this.

Neither Joe Montana nor Tom Brady were ever considered at any point in their respective careers to have had the best tangible QB skills, they are inarguably two of the best QB's ever. Nothing to do with arm strength because half the league is stronger. Nothing to do with speed or athleticism because half the league is faster and more athletic. So they are just QUARTERBACKS.

And yes Houliston is a better QUARTERBACK than Towles, McCoy, and Barker.

The problem with your analogy is you're using NFL standards. In addition, the QB position is changing. It's not just throwing the ball anymore.

We disagree. As always I want to be clear that when I am saying one is better I am NOT saying the other cannot play. I've already said "Houlihan" is a really good high school QB. My guess is he's a TMC/Campbellsville level QB and will do really well if that's the route he takes.

What level do you seem him playing?

So boys if Barker was eating cake is he slinging footballs too?

What's the problem with using NFL as an analogy. The point was made using NFL players because it makes the point in a way that anyone can clearly understand. There is more to the position than measurable skills.

You then support your point by using a college projection which has nothing to do with high school.

What you and I agree on is that they are all good high school qb's. If given a choice for the next five years in college any coach would take Towles or Barker over the others. If given a choice for the next game on the high school schedule I'll take Houliston.

I'm not saying you're wrong, just saying that D1 coaches like Spurrier don't see that same talent, or that Elite 11 evaluators don't either. When Houliston gets the accolades that Barker has, I'll change my mind.

The Elite 11 personnel, Steve Spurrier, and Mark Stoops are now part of the anti-Highlands agenda? :ohbrother:

Those coaches see things in Barker that they don't see in Houliston because he is more capable of performing against better competition.

Not trying to knock Houliston, he's a great quarterback. You are just not being fair to him or Barker when trying to argue that he's the better quarterback.

Houliston is one of the most accurate high school quarterbacks that I have ever seen. Houliston is a great hs qb. He is to small and slow to play D1 football. Drew is extremely calm under pressure and doesn't get rattled. The kid is an absolute stud at the hs level....:ylsuper:
