Duffy put a stop to the bikes because one of the guys had a pretty bad wreck in the summer of '88 or '89 and that was it. He also began the "traveling" shirt in his first season (1988) and I loved it. Now, the ties were worn by the basketball players on game day more recently, but that too has gone by the wayside. I would like to see the ties again.

I've always kind of liked that play; whether it's ran inside or outside. It was a play that opposing coaches and players knew was coming, but couldn't stop it. On the referenced video, the left guard pulled and blocked the defensive end; left tackle pulled and sealed the LBer. TD Highlands.

I am far from a Highlands fan, hated the cannon going off while on the opposing sideline, etc.. However, I think it would be pretty cool if they showed a cannon going off on the video board when (if, lol) they score. Even if it is a graphic (cartoon) cannon and not a real video.

The world we live in today.....

We really do need to bring the cannon back to the HHS football games in some way. For those who think it is politically incorrect or are afraid of some kind of stigma, I say you either did not grow up in this town or you've forgotten our history. Fort Thomas was founded as part of a line of defenses (cannons) that protected Cincinnati during the Civil War. It later became a military post and was once the home of the 10th Infantry. It served as an induction center for tens of thousands of soldiers going to war. Even today, it is the home of the 478th Engineering Battalion of the Army Reserve.

 

So, even though our team is the "Bluebirds," our cannon reflected and celebrated our common history. I once got the chance (thanks to someone very special) to fire the cannon during one of the last games that it was shot from the sideline. I can tell you, that was an honor and a thrill that I will never forget! The cannon is a part of every kid who ever went to Highlands, every boy making his way through the ranks of the FTJFL, every teacher and every parent. It really meant something to us...and it still does.

 

Okay, we can't have the real thing out there now. I think we've all made our peace with that reality. But we can still honor this tradition of our community in an all new way, thanks to modern technology. I say we find a way to make this happen. It's the right thing to do.

I remember being about 7 years old sitting on the porch counting the cannon shots off in the distance and hoping for that last one right around bed time. Checked the score in the Kentucky Post in the morning to see if I had tabulated the score properly. (Saturday was the only day of the week that The Post had a morning edition) Seven cannon shots, deduct one for the start of each half and one for the win meant the Birds had likely put up 28 points. Plenty for a win in those days.

The only thing noteworthy about the video is that the camera is so loud that the camera can't record it. It's just an aural blank spot. Kinda funny more than anything.

I'm sure this has been posted before but I was wondering about a couple things the other day and thought I would see if there were any thoughts on this...

 

Not to take anything away from all the success the program has had in the "Dale" era, but when did some of the traditions that I grew up with begin to disappear at Highlands? Such as...

 

Riding bikes to practice and not being allowed to ride in cars during summer practice... I remember the guys from Southgate had to leave their bikes at someone's house while the bridge over 471 was being built.

 

Curfew at 8:29 during the week

 

Burr haircuts... Not a coaches rule but self policed. I remember riding around town prior to practice starting and "taking care" of those not yet on board with the hair style. My mother still hasn't forgiven me for getting mine two days before my senior picture. Those haircuts weren't cool in the 70s and 80s... Unless you played football as a Bird.

 

Keeping your helmet on during the game, whether playing or not...

 

These are just a few I'm sure, but since when did they start to disappear and why?

 

 

How about handshakes after games...I miss those:thumb:
