WAS a great coach? Is he deceased? Did he retire? :lol2:

I sat behind him, watched and listened to him a few games last year. Loved his play calling. I have a lot of respect for him as a coach. We will see what he makes of the talent level at Walton.

I loved Walter's review. Pretty much spot on.

Good luck to the Breds this year. They are a very talented squad and well coached. Expect a great season and lots of college coaches watching them this year.

Already happening, just in the past week the entire NKU coaching staff and Belmont were there on the same day to take in the open gym. Also, former University of Kentucky forward and Samford University asst. coach, Scott Padgett was there as well.

Was told tonight that over the weekend Jr. Drew McDonald practiced with Wright State, along with Owen County's Carson Williams. McDonald, Williams, and a kid from Hazard and two reserves from Wright State played against the Wright State starters and lost 7-6, 7-6, & won 7-6.

Yep, Tis the season for coaches to be visiting HS open gyms.

Another nice accomplishment for Drew McDonald.....courtesy of Marc Hardin at the Enquirer http://nky.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/AB/20130924/SPT0302/309240123/

McDonald takes hoops break, wins DII title

Junior Drew McDonald hasn’t been able to concentrate on golf as much as he’d like. The 6-foot-7 Newport Central Catholic two-sport standout has been making visits to colleges the last few months as he seeks a destination for his basketball skills, which he’s been honing at the expense of course time.

So it was with quite a bit of satisfaction that he walked away with the Northern Kentucky Athletic Conference Division II individual medalist honor for the third time in four years Monday at Hickory Sticks. He shot a score of 1-over-par 72, carding a 35 on the back nine.

“It’s the third time,” McDonald said. “I won it as an eighth-grader, a sophomore and a junior, but I didn’t get it as a freshman.”

NewCatch coach Jeff Schulkens, while disappointed in the Thoroughbreds’ third-place showing behind Division II team champion St. Henry and runner-up Highlands, was impressed by McDonald’s ability to repeat as individual winner.

“He’s been playing basketball and going to quite a few open gyms so coaches can come and see him, and he made a recruiting visit to Wright State this past weekend, so he hasn’t played nearly as much golf as he did last year,” the coach said.

St. Henry, with a score of 314, ended the Thoroughbreds’ two-year conference reign. NewCath had a team score of 337, eight shots behind Highlands (329). It’s St. Henry’s first NKAC crown under fifth-year coach Jerod Cahill.

“I’m really proud of my team,” Cahill said. “I thought everybody played great.”

The Crusaders were led by Luke Tobergte’s 74. He was followed by teammates Jordan Noble (77) and Colson Holland (79).

“I’m glad it happened because we’ve been dominating NCC this year,” said Tobergte. He sank an eagle on No. 3. “The greens here were the best I’ve ever seen them, and we went out and played well.”

What does the starting line-up look like height wise?

You'd think that they'll be able to find a shooter to sit back and keep other teams out of zone (or to try to burn them if they do zone). I'd imagine that if nothing else, some kid that might not see the floor otherwise sees working on their shooting to make it a strength as a way of getting into the game.

5'10 Zack Pangallo

6'2 Tanner Moeves

6'2 Grant Moeves

6'7 Drew McDonald

6'8 Jake Schulte

And I'd say those are all legit measurements...not "program listings."

Weyer will not start? Wow. He would be the top dog if he had stayed at HHS.

Even if he doesn't start.....the 6'5" sophomore will see plenty of minutes.

As good as the talent may be I question who on that list is a true banger?

McDonald has lost weight and been shooting 3's in Open gym I have been hearing and Schulte is pretty lean.

My question to you is what team in the 9th can out bang NCC?

My question to you is what team in the 9th can out bang NCC?

Outside shooting will determine how far this team goes. Not how well they "bang" against other teams. Newcath has the best front court but Holmes and Dixie will both have enough athleticism and size to create an even match up on the boards.

Schulte and McDonald both have great court vision and an ability to pass. If teams sag to double and the shooters consistently knock down shots, that creates a lot more opportunities for them to get mis matches down low in one on one situations.

The times I've seen Newcath, Grant was in there with the other 4.

But like LB13 said, Weyer will still get A LOT of PT this year.

3 Transfers vying for playing time. Good problems to have.

Maybe not the 9th...possibly Dixie and Holmes but when they get downstate in some of those Top Tourneys they will be tested.

I honestly hope the Breds finally get the monkey off their back this year and get to Rupp. The program deserves it.

Who is the 3rd transfer? If you mean Weyer he enrolled last year as a freshman.

Yea Weyer, he may have enrolled as a freshman but I still consider it a transfer. Its all good, just mentioning him because he could have been a key player for the Bluebirds. He contributed as a frosh so he and the Moeves boys will all be keys to this year's team.
