If you don't like the 6 Class / playoff system we have now...

Featured Replies

Then consider how things were back in 1974 and prior.

1974 was the year before the switch to 3 Classes in the state. Jefferson County schools made up Class 3A and the rest of the state was divided into 1A and 2A. Most districts had from 8-12 teams, and one district has 16 teams. That sounds terrible but to make matters worse, only the top team in each district made the playoffs.

And to add even more fun to the equation, playoff berths were decided by The Dickenson Ratings System. You old timers will remember that one. I'm not sure what the scheduling rules were during that time, but they appear to be flexible. Some teams played 5 district games, some played as many as 11. I'm guessing the Dickenson system required you to play a certain minimum of district games, but that is speculation only.

Sound like fun?

With only 1 team from each district making the playoffs, round 1 was the Regional Championhsip game. Here is what the 1A playoffs looked like for 1974

Region 1 (d1) Murray 28, (d2) Glasgow 0

Region 2 (d2) Paris 14, (d1) Bardstown 12

Region 3 (d1) Beechwood 56, (d2) Lewis County 14

Region 4 (d1) Lynch 16, (d2) Elkhorn City 0

Semi's Murray 19, Paris 8

Beechwood 34, Lynch 0

Finals: Murray 14, Beechwood 0

I'm not going to post all 4 regions, but here is the district standings for both districts in Region 1. All I can say is Wow!

Overall records are not available, posted here is the district records only and the final Dickenson System Rating

That's good stuff. I believe the requirement was to play four games, but it could have been five (some time between 1959 and 1974 the minimum requirement switched, but I can't recall if it went from 5 to 4 or vice versa). With such large regions, however, most of your games would have been local. But if you played all the local folks and none was any good, then you might not earn enough points to make the playoffs. I seem to recall Boyle County going 4-0 in district play back in the '60s but finishing 4th in the district.

I think everyone can agree the Dickenson System is not the way to go, so thankfully they moved on from that. Having two classes for the entire state outside of Louisville is also unbelievable. I can't even wrap my head around how that would look now.

Where did you get the link? Are there other years available? Great stuff!!!

Remember those days well, pretty much if you lost a district game you were done.

Really good stuff Toots!!!

I would like to see the district standings for Class 2A in both 1981 and 1983. Corbin was ranked #1 in the state and I believe lost only 1 game both years, but failed to make the playoffs either year.

I don't have 1981 on me but here is Class AA - Region IV - District 2 - Sub-District 2 from 1983:

1. Somerset (3-0, 11-0)

2. Corbin (2-1, 9-1)

3. Middlesboro (1-2, 7-3)

4. Wayne County (0-3, 1-9)

Actually, I did have 1981. It was only a two-team district that year, as Somerset and Wayne were in District 1 with Boyle, Garrard and Russell.

1. Middlesboro (1-0, 11-0)

2. Corbin (0-1, 9-1)

I know this is a bit off topic, but seeing Tusi's 1974 Standings with a winless Caverna and a winless McLean County I can't help but wonder who is the all-time leader in losses?

Interesting question. My first thought is that it would be an independent district team because they've been around much longer than most county schools. But there are several consolidated county schools that have been playing since the 50's or 60's with little success. Most losses would certainly be a dubious record, but it is something interesting to know.

Tusi..another thing that the link helped lead me to that you will find interesting is proof Belfry was playing football as far back as 1928.

Paintsville defeated Belfry 33-6 in 1928

After the fire, how far back did you say Belfry's records actually went?
