September 24, 201313 yr I always look at QB Rating and TD to INT ratio and a good QB should have around a 4TD to 1 INT ratio. Dalton has 5TD's and 3 INT's .... not very good. Should be 5TD 1INT Put it this way, when the Bengals recovered the fumble on the 4th and 1 play late in the 4th qtr, a friend of mine was telling me yesterday he was hoping we didn't score on the fumble recovery because it left too much time on the clock. I told him if we didn't score there we may have lost because Andy Dalton isn't one you can depend on right now to lead the team downfiled for the winning TD. He thought about it and agreed. Dalton isn't there yet and really hasn't done much this season to improve over where he was last season. The first game of the year this year Andy looked the best, the 2nd game he took huge steps backwards, and the 3rd game he looked average. The 2 turnovers in the 3rd game is what kept him from improving. Peyton Manning Philip Rivers Tony Romo EJ Manuel Alex Smith Those are the only QBs with a 4:1 TD/INT ratio this season. Last year that list consisted of: Tom Brady Aaron Rodgers Robert Griffin III Guess Brees, Ryan, Big Ben, Luck, Stafford, Wilson, Flacco, Eli, etc. are all terrible too.
September 24, 201313 yr QBR I feel is the best stat for evaluating quarterbacks. There is some validity to other stats (TD/INT, QB rating, yards etc.) but QBR reveals a lot, imo. It discounts garbage stats. Take RGIII for example. If you just look at his numbers they are not bad, but his overall QBR rating is 26.6 because a bulk of his numbers have been accumulated in meaningless times of games. In this world of Fantasy Football people get too consumed with numbers. NFL Total Quarterback Rating - National Football League - ESPN

I was talking about being a very good QB and what I personally think puts a QB there is having a 4-1 TD vs INT ratio. Even a 3 to 1 ratio isn't bad. If you think 1 int to every 2 TD's is great then that is your opinion. I think it's not very good. Oh you did get one QB right though in the list you think I think are terrible QB's, Eli...he is the most overrated QB in the league. Eli in his entire career has only had 1 year where his TD to INT ratio was actually higher than a 2.0 ratio. That is horrible.

The 2:1 ratio isn't to bad depending on how many touchdowns it ends up being. Yeah if its 14 touchdowns to 7 interceptions it is ok but not great. However if a QB ends up with 30 touchdowns and 15 interceptions that is a pretty good season. Especially if their rating and completion percentage is good too.

September 25, 201313 yr Author Drew Brees? Not very good? Last year was a down year for Brees, I think even he would admit that. Looking at only TD and INT ratio, 2 to 1 is avg. That is why you look at other things also like the rating. The list of QB's last year who had the 4-1 ratio is the best of the best last year and not one of those names surprised anyone they were there. RGIII was all everyone was talking about, why? Because he had a incredible season.
September 25, 201313 yr Last year was a down year for Brees, I think even he would admit that. Brees - Career: 330 TDs, 169 INTs....TD:INT Ratio of 1.95 Brady - Career: 339 TDs, 125 INTs....TD:INT Ratio of 2.71 Manning - Career: 448 TDs, 209 INTs....TD:INT Ratio of 2.14 Montana - Career: 273 TDs, 139 INTs....TD:INT Ratio of 1.96 Favre - Career: 508 TDs, 336 INTs....TD:INT Ratio of 1.51 Elway - Career: 300 TDs, 226 INTs....TD:INT Ratio of 1.33 Yep, 4:1 or 3:1 indicates a good QB....

Do me a favor and show me a list of the QB's with a career stat of 3:1 and 4:1 ratio, you will get a list of the best of the best. I like how you also ignored the other part of the post that said that is just one indicator, not the only indicator, but whatever. You could go down a list of every year for QB's to see who had the best ratio (with at least 10 games starting) and out of the top 5 QB's on the list you will have basically see what QB's had the best seasons those years. You won't have the same names on the list year after year but you will see some repeat names now and then and those are usually the ones that are considered among the best in the league. I haven't seen Andy Dalton's name on any. Edited September 26, 201313 yr by JokersWild24
September 25, 201313 yr ^The only QB I've found that has 3:1 or greater is Rodgers....Young was 2.17, Aikman was 1.17, Bradshaw was barely 1.01.... Who am I leaving out? Point is TD:INT ratio is a terrible way to judge a QB. At the very least, if you're going to use it, use it properly. 2:1 or better is a very good ratio.

It's funny you brought up Bradshaw, I always thought he and Namath were among the most overrated HOF QB's, they were actually not very good imo they were just fortunate to either have 1 memorable game (Namath) or been on one of the best teams ever (Bradshaw).
September 25, 201313 yr Author I will admit that the 4:1 is a bit high lol, 3:1 is a great ratio. If you can finish your career with a 2.5 ration you had a pretty darn good career imo.

September 25, 201313 yr Author Congrats to UKMustangFan you got Hellbird to admit that he was wrong! I have always admitted if I was wrong. Something you should try sometime.
September 26, 201313 yr I have always admitted if I was wrong. Something you should try sometime. Like when have I been wrong in discussions with you, please show me. I ask you all the time to show me but you always fail to do so. When I have countless time presented straight up facts to prove you wrong. Just like early last year with all your made up stuff that I completely proved wrong with facts. I have admitted that I was wrong on here, I ended up being wrong on Carson Palmer and I admitted it. You on the other hand will argue things, and then make up arguments in the middle of it to avoid being wrong. Just like somehow you twisted the most talented comment by me into somehow you talking about just the 2005 team being better since you see that talent as a whole from starters to bench is better this year. So you nicely changed to trying to talk about which team is better to try to cover yourself. Nice try man. You say the Bengals have a bad off season blah, blah, blah and the Bengals do exactly what I talked about on why they didn't overpay for some of the guys you wanted. You wanted to always say I called the Bengals great last year, I asked you to prove where I said that. You never could because I never said it, and still never admitted you were wrong. So tell me where I am wrong, and not just in your opinion that I am wrong. Then if you can prove it to me, then I will say I was wrong.
