How about some preventitive care, a.k.a. teaching people how to eat?

Featured Replies

Our daughter packs her lunch nearly every day. I send Reese Cups, Fruit Roll-Ups, and Kit Kats.

Petty & immature? No doubt.

Randy's way of giving the government two middle fingers? No doubt.

Double stuffed oreos in one of my guys' lunch every day. Today I threw in a few gummi bears, too, as a little surprise. It's the little things.

Lucky kid. Love some Oreos.

And Jim, just so you know, my tub-of-lard daughter just finished some yogurt & is now eating strawberries as I type.

Good heavens Jim, it was a joke.

Though she does get a Reese Cup or Kit Kat or whatever, she also has a lot of healthy options in her lunchbox. And she eats much more fruit & vegetables than the vast majority of kids. She's also very active in sports, personal life, etc.

The point is this: If Michelle Obama wants to champion healthy/better eating, that's great & I'm glad she does it. Just don't force it down our throats as they have done.

She should just worry about the "junk in her trunk" before she tells everyone else what to eat.

With how overboard the extreme anti-government sentiment has gotten these days, I can't tell anymore.

But seriously, though, how is what the First Lady is doing any different from Nancy Reagan and the ridiculous "Just Say No" campaign? Every first lady has a pet project. We are a very fat, unhealthy country, and I contribute to those disappointing numbers. What's wrong with her wanting to help remedy that? We gripe and moan about the cost of health care, yet nobody wants to do anything to prevent those costs by living a healthy lifestyle. Instead we just keep contributing to the problem by not being able to help ourselves, and not being able to resist the marketing efforts of the fast food industry.

Is that worth it if your daughter ends up overweight because of it?

How do you get from Point A to Point B?

Point A is a kit kat in the lunch box, point B is obesity. "You can't get there from here."

Point A is super sizing it while watching Honey Boo Boo, point B is obesity. That will happen by tomorrow. :lol2:

Oh, I'm not a fan at all of our government. The joking part was what I put in my daughter's lunch & why I put it there.

As I said, I don't mind her championing this issue at all. I expect wives of Presidents to do this kind of thing & that's fine. But when it's forced on us the way that it has been, then I take issue with it. I also thought individuals should be free to do whatever they wanted with their own bodies?

While I certainly don't deny that this issue is an important one, I don't believe that it compares in severity to the anti-drug campaign.

Did you not read my last post? I said I couldn't tell he was joking.

Did not. Timing of our posts was pretty close.

I have said for years that human nutrition and more physical education should be taught from K-12.

Personal finance should be added 6-12. Kids need to know way more about these three "subjects" than anything else they will ever learn in school.

Genetics play a role in obesity also.

I know that many on here think that a nanny state is what we need. But, why does the "freedom to do with our bodies as we please" (abortion), take precedent over folks that want to eat what and how they want? Due to poor genetics and poor diet, I was overweight and sliding toward poor health. I changed my diet and in the process, I went from 260lbs to 220lbs in 3 months, without central planning from the politburo or gestapo.

I completely agree along as it is the right nutritional and physical education. Teaching what the government considers proper nutrition is a waste of time. As far as physical education, I took PE as a senior for the easy A. My teacher was BT Wayne, the former baseball coach at Henderson. If it was cold or raining he rolled out basketballs in gym and said have at it. If it was nice outside he would take us to a field by the football stadium and leave us to play softball while he went to the baseball field to mow or do some other maintenance on it.

Obviously genetics can compound the problem if you don't have proper diet and exercise but it still comes down to your diet and exercise. Aside from some serious medical conditions, people just don't get fat without a crappy diet.

I'm not calling for that. I'm calling for education. I'm calling for premium breaks for those who reach certain health benchmarks. I'm not calling for McDonald's to be put out of business by the Federal Government. I'm hoping that people will be smart enough not to eat there, and the natural market will take McDs under.
