September 4, 201313 yr As I have sat and thought about what has happened over the weekend with UK losing to WKU and shortly after Coach Stoops was quick to make changes in spots. But the most noticeable spot was at the QB position. So because I travel a lot with my job I had time to ponder the thinking of Coach Stoops and wonder if the change at QB was more about winning today or more about winning in the future. Few points to think about: • What was the difference in Whitlow winning the job over Smith? Wasn’t it his abilities to make plays with his feet? • Now think about the playing calling when Whitlow was in the game? Seemed to me the play calling was designed more for the run game than the “Air Raid” – seemed to me a little conservative. • If Whitlow was playing bad enough to lose his job during the game – Why wasn’t Smith brought in Sooner? • Think about the play calling when Smith was in the game – to me it seemed more aggressive. • Also think about WKU defense at the time Smith was brought in. They are up 18 points in the 4th quarter. As I watched the game WKU defense went from playing to win – Preventing to lose the game. (not as aggressive) So I ask why is Stoops so quick to pull the trigger on a guy. How should Whitlow perceive his coach? As someone doesn’t have your back? The real reason for the change at QB is because Coach Stoops needed a fall guy for the loss on Saturday. When I don’t think he should have used Whitlow. He has a fall guy for the next 2 years in Joker Phillips. There are ways to blame Joker without calling him by name. I think the benching of Whitlow is just 1 of many things you will see coming from a coach desperately trying hard to make sure he doesn’t become a victim of UK Football. Here is what Stoops has done the Jalen Whitlow – he has ended his chances of ever being successful as the QB at UK. Because Stoops replacing him as the QB after 3 quarters of football now has planted the idea in the minds of BBN that he isn’t a QB. Now everyone wants him to play Wide receiver. Congrats to Coach Stoops on diverting attention to himself. Here is an idea for the UK coaching staff – how about coaching a guy up and making him better.
September 4, 201313 yr QB play was not the reason UK was dominated. It certainly could have been better, but there were other issues that were of more concern--defense being the primary problem IMO. Play-calling was another aspect that left me scratching my head. The first possession of the 2nd half & UK has it 3rd & 9 at around midfield, I think. And the call is a sweep. On another play it was 2nd & long (maybe 2nd & 15?) and we run a draw. Honestly, if I didn't know there was a coaching change, there were numerous times when I couldn't tell whether it was Joker/Sanders on the sidelines or Stoops/Brown. I'm not at all abandoning Stoops/UK football, but I'm not sure there could have been a poorer showing than what we saw Saturday. Who knows what a QB change will do to the team, but there is huge room for improvement needed from both players & coaches.
September 4, 201313 yr This thread is completely ridiculous. He switched QBs because Smith is better. Simple as that.
September 4, 201313 yr To Stoops' credit he took blame for the loss and also said that Smith gives them a better chance this week against this defense they face this week. I do think Whitlow should be a WR and I don't think any of Joker's QBs are the guys that Neal Brown wants to run his offense.
September 4, 201313 yr This thread is a joke. Stoops did not cause Whitlow to suck at QB in that first game. They gave him the opportunity to prove himself as a QB and he failed, simple as that. You play the QB who gives you the best chance at winning and it's clearly Max Smith.

Why would Stoops need to find a scapegoat at this point? I think that it is as simple as this, Smith is the best option vs. the next opponent. My guess is that we will see Whitlow as the QB many more times before the season is over. Coach Buckett, you may want to start listening to audio books while traveling..........
September 4, 201313 yr For the record, no thread on BGP is a joke or ridiculous. It's a melting pot of opinions and with all of the hype and hoopla about AirRaid and StoopsTroops and all of that crap any thread about Stoops and UK football after getting murdered by the Hilltoppers is fair game IMO.

I don't disagree that the hype came to early and thus some of the complaints are warranted topics for conversation but to say that Stoops set up Whitlow to fail and etc. isn't fair IMO. Whitlow started the game and outside of his TD run he did nothing on offense. He was horrible. Obviously Stoops and the rest of UK wants to win so why wouldn't he start the QB who showed enough to warrant such a move? I don't see the logic in complaining about Stoops making the QB change given the performance of the WKU game.

There you go again, PP; trying to be reasonable.

Maybe it is just me but after the way they looked last Saturday nothing should be off limits when it comes to discussing the 2013 Wildcats. What happens if they look worse this week?
September 4, 201313 yr Author Sorry everyone thinks its a joke. I am just pointing out a different take of what has occurred last few days. If Whitlow was performing bad enough to lose the job why did it take 4 quarters to replace him?
September 4, 201313 yr Sorry everyone thinks its a joke. I am just pointing out a different take of what has occurred last few days. If Whitlow was performing bad enough to lose the job why did it take 4 quarters to replace him? Because you give your QB enough time to see if he can overcome the adversity. They talked with him at halftime and probably tried to settle him down and give him time to recoup. It didn't work and they pulled him soon after.
September 4, 201313 yr It was obvious from the fact that Whitlow didn't win the job earlier that he and Smith were very close. I'm stunned it was close as Whitlow cannot throw the ball well enough. Had it been Whitlow's job for a while then I think Coach's criticism is fair.
