Turning down Vandy to go to Rice, when the coach is on the hottest seat in America, seems like an odd decision -- but it is his to make and it is great to have options (especially schools of that ilk).

Jackson is a fine young man and I'm certain he'll make a very thoughtful and informed decision about his future. Wherever he decides to go will be the beneficiary of his presence.

As far as academics go, Rice is on most any school's level. Here are their Freshman Admission Statistics.

 

Didn't know if you meant why would he turn down Vanderbilt to go to Rice because of the academic side as well or if it were solely because their coach was on the hot seat, so apologies if you meant the latter, which I'm guessing you did, it's just hard to infer without tone, pronunciation, etc.

 

I'd think it would be a bigger deal if he were going to sign early, but if he's not going to, then he's still got some options open. I would guess that the bigger schools like Vanderbilt have probably started recruiting over him if they haven't already though.

Just curious, but did playing with the Travelers give him the exposure that led to that kind of interest? It is pretty surprising, isn't it, that a kid goes from no offers to a list like he compiled, over a summer? The kid's academics are OBVIOUSLY in order and, with the offers he had to choose from, he couldn't have gone wrong. Even if he'd chosen a "non scholarship" offer from an Ivy, those schools have all gotten very competitive with finances and they all have such large endowments that most athletes come out having to pay very little out of their own pocket. When you get a little older, you realize it's probably a better move financially to pay $3,000 to go to Harvard than to get a full ride to some mid major.

Yeah, when he didn't sign in November, the writing was on the wall. It will be interesting to see who gets involved now, he's had a strong year.
