Great kid, will do well wherever he goes. Also was shocked that at State Tourney last year, he had no offers.

It's hard to be surprised with not knowing the kid. I always assume they'll take an offer close to home if all other things are equal.

I think they just felt it was a great fit for him coming off their visit.

Lafayette High School standout Jackson Davis announced his commitment to Rice University on Monday morning.

Davis — a 6-foot-7 senior forward — chose the Owls over Columbia, Harvard, Penn, Princeton, Texas Tech and Vanderbilt. He took an unofficial visit to Rice earlier this month.

The Owls are coached by Ben Braun, who went to five NCAA Tournaments during 12 seasons as the head coach at California from 1996-2008. He also went to three NCAA tourneys during 10-plus seasons at Eastern Michigan. Braun is 56-103 in five years at Rice, including a 5-26 showing last season.

Davis played with the Lexington-based Kentucky Travelers over the summer and is expected to be one of the top players in the state this season. His father — Johnathon Davis — played for Kentucky from 1987-91.
