Bellevue HS teacher resigns over alleged relationship with former student

Featured Replies

Do you really think with that reputation, deserved or otherwise, that she'd be chosen over other candidates similarly qualified?

With what reputation? All I'm seeing is one adult having a relationship with another consenting adult. If people want to make a stink about it, that's on them, not her.

I think she'd have a great chance of winning a lawsuit against the news station if she's unable to find other work (which I highly doubt).

Funny you say that, I have an attorney friend (not on this site) whom I discussed this with and he said that the statement by the school was carefully crafted by someone who handles their legal affairs and that the news station has no liability with the story they ran. His opinion of course.

I hope you're right and it doesn't follow her, but I can't agree that it won't.

Why would a school hire a 25 year old female that admittedly started dating an 18 year old student that just graduated? Is it illegal what she did? No. Does a school have other options? Yes.

She didn't do anything wrong, not sure what would follow her?

Seems to be some people are having a hard time understanding why the initial story made up of "might bes", "maybes", and "could haves" is troublesome.

Let's pretend, just for a second, that your sister, or daughter, or mom, or brother, dad, whatever...was on the receiving end of such a story. Would you feel a little bit differently then? Would you be upset that your family's name has been put through the mud due to unconfirmed allegations? Would you be upset that your loved one's career has been, for all intents and purposes, destroyed by those same unconfirmed allegations? Honest questions. Just want to hear your perspective.

And no where in that statement is a name mentioned. The news station went one step further to make sure they added that.

Here's why I have such an opinion on the matter. We had a young female teacher at our church go through something very similar about 3 years ago. She was married with small children, and an underage (16 I believe) special education male student who she taught went to school administration and claimed an "inappropriate relationship" and that he had text messages and a "revealing" picture of her on his phone. Big scandal, her name hit the newspapers and local news. After the investigation...turned out the kid was mad at her because he had been using his phone in class and she took it away from him for the class period. Absolutely nothing untoward happened, and he admitted that it was all a lie during the investigation. The kid was in special education for some emotional/psychological issues and that may have played a role in it as well.

Anyway, huge embarrassment for her and her family, and much of the embarrassment could have been spared if her name would have just been kept out of it. Terrible situation.

This is why I find this story so troubling as well. If the news media continues to report on stories before there is actually something newsworthy to report on, anyone who works within a school setting is at risk of having something similar happen. All it takes is one kid who has it out for his or her teacher to get some rumors snowballing. Then, all that's needed is one quick call to a news station and it's all downhill from there...regardless of whether there is any truth to the allegations or not. Scary stuff...

Totally agree.

I agree that of what we know, there was no wrong-doing. However, I'm still wondering why she resigned. Before I get bum-rushed, yes, I realize anyone can resign for any reason without having to disclose the reason. In this case, it just seems like there could be something smoldering here. Otherwise, the timing of all of this seems odd.

If this story is it in its entirety, I feel badly for the young lady. Just seems like something is amiss.

We will never really know why she resigned, but being in a small close-nit community where gossip is usually more of a big deal than in a large district. She may just not have wanted to deal with it. It depends on her getting hired some where else. She teaches a content area that is difficult to find teachers and there are some districts that won't care, but it probably will be more difficult for a smaller district to hire. If districts do any due diligence they will find this on the 'net whether it is right or wrong. I am not a lawyer, but I find it doubtful She has a lawsuit. She resigned that makes it much more difficult. I agree with Mentsch, something seems amiss.

As a somewhat recent Bellevue alum I hate seeing my alma matter in these kind of news reports. That being said I can almost be confident there is more to the story. As its in Bellevue I'm surprised more hasn't been leaked. I just hope this type of thing goes away.

I wouldn't hate the situation too much, stuff happens in all areas and all school, it's just most stuff no one knows about.
