Preseason Power Rankings: #6 Cincinnati Bengals

Bengals Ready to Join League's Elite

"The Bengals rarely are the trendy pick to do anything other than not be very good. Heading in to the 2013 season, the Bengals are better than very good. The Bengals are becoming one of the elite teams in the NFL.

Even at No. 6, there’s a long way to go to get to the top of the mountain. For starters, the Bengals need to end a postseason losing streak that dates back to the game in which they ended Bo Jackson’s football career by destroying his hip on a routine tackle. And they need to get past the other elite teams in the AFC, like the Ravens, Broncos, and Patriots.

Regardless of whether it happens, the Bengals have become something they haven’t been for more than a generation: Relevant. And to the teams they’ll play this year: Dangerous."

More from PFT on this:

Prospects.

But for the Broncos, who enter the second year of the Peyton Manning experiment, it would be tempting to predict that the Bengals will make it to the Super Bowl for the first time since the 1988 season. It’s more likely that the Bengals will get back to the playoffs for a third straight year — and perhaps finally win a postseason game.

If the break the curse of Bo Jackson’s broken hip, coach Marvin Lewis could be destined to lose one or both of his coordinators. Also, any free agents will be more attractive to other teams, forcing the Bengals to do something other than wait for them to not get offered more money elsewhere.

So this may be the year to go all in, which means the Bengals should be willing to take chances every week in order not just to get to the playoffs but to position themselves for success when they get there. Which could lead them all the way to New York, for an open-air Super Bowl with conditions that could resemble the 1981 AFC title game against the Chargers.

And for the record, the Pats were #7 and the Packers #8...

Too high or too low for the Bengals?

Too high. I am a firm believer in you have to earn it to get it. The Bengals haven't earned #6 yet. The offense still has way too many question marks to be ranked this high. They may be the #6 defensive team, perhaps even better. But the rest of the team drops them lower than #6.

This is me trying to be objective. On paper I think #6 is about right, on past performance I think #6 is a few spots too high.

Do you think this offense on paper qualifies them at #6? I see way too many question marks. They have one player that scares me if I am an opponent - A J Green - and it is easy to take away a receiver. Everything else is just average or a little better and their other wide outs are big question marks. If we were ranking offenses only, is the Bengals offense even in the top 15?

The schedule sets up favorably for the Bengals. Only real road tests out of the division are at Detroit and at SanDiego only because of the trip. The difficult games on the schedule are at home. Pats, Pack, Vikings. IF they don't make noise in the playoffs this year, something is seriously wrong.

I think your season will depend on the play of your QB. The defense is outstanding.

Yes I do. I think we (I have to call the Bengals we) are loaded at the skill positions with the one possible exception being #2 WR. And I think the OL is solid.

The biggest question mark is Dalton, PFT put it well, he isn't a strength but he isn't a weakness. It is time to become a strength. The offense and Dalton need to be more aggressive.

It seems to me that other people have agreed that the Bengals have done things right and had a good off season and became a better team. Which was highly debated for awhile this off season. :D

I agree that on paper #6 seems right, but until they go out and prove it I do think they are a little to high. I think #8 is more in line with where they are for now.

Very true! I have said this numerous times this off season, this is a huge year for Dalton and the Bengals. How the Bengals do this year will depend on Dalton. If he can improve then they can take that next step. If he stays about the same then most likely a first round playoff loss.

Agree with most here. Dalton really needs to show me something this season or I get back in the market for a QB. Also need another stud bookend to take pressure off of AJ. Love the D and D does win championships.

That stud should hopefully be Eifert. Using two TE sets should take a lot of pressure off of Green, because teams have to be prepared with the run with 2 TE's in, and if they still double Green then they could run, or they should be able to stretch the middle of the field with the 2 TE's. If Eifert ends up being as good as he is suppose to be, then they don't need a stud #2.

Deffinatly too high, Packers are better and until the QB position is one we can count on as well as RB and 2nd WR I can't see the Bengals being above the Packers. I hopee I'm wrong, I am getting older by the minute and before this team loses some oof their main players because they won't re-sign them early enough to save money tthen this may be one of the few years they need to make a move and win it all. The window of opportunity is closing and they need to take advantage of what they have in the next few years or it may be too late.
