Serious question. If she didn't work for the bulldog, would 300k cover her lawyer fees?

It would be a % of the verdict, correct? So yes.

That's why I asked. I didn't know how it worked since the case has been going on for so long.

And in this case my gut tells me Deters won't take a dime of the jury award.

Good point, many people will think they can do just that but here is a good third party opinion on that subject from Eric Goldman a legal expert working for Forbes:

“I doubt this jury verdict will make other online publishers of user-generated content too nervous,” he says. “This case involved such an unusual combination of facts that I don’t anticipate many other similar results.” cleardot8.gif

IMO Deters is a complete jerk. With that said he seems to be amazing at his job. He got her off when she had sex with her teenage student and now got her close to 400Ka about a posting on the internet WOW. Seems like he would be the lawyer you would want to have your back

Good point and I see what that guy is saying, but I can see dirty people looking for easy money and fame trying to do something similar. Oh well it is what it is.

You hit on a good point, as much as most people can't stand Deters, there is some parts of his profession he is very good at.

I think the owner of thedirty would be a good case study, I heard a funny story about why he started the site and I bet you he makes a ton of money from the site. Also from the article on Forbes:

This Court holds by reason of the very name of the site, the manner in which it is managed, and the personal comments of defendant Richie, the defendants have specifically encouraged development of what is offensive about the content of the site,” wrote Judge William Bertelsman in a ruling that sent the case to trial. A Kentucky jury agreed Thursday, awarding Jones $338,000 in damages.

On the other side of the fence:

Gingras disagrees with the judge’s finding that the Communications Decency Act doesn’t apply because Richie screens the content that appears on the gossip site. He plans to appeal “immediately” and looks forward to taking the case to the Sixth Circuit. He hopes the case might eventually make its way to the Supreme Court for national clarification on the degree of protection provided by the CDA.

Eric Goldman, a legal expert on the Communications Decency Act (and a Forbes contributor), also thinks that the judge’s ruling in this case was flawed.

“[H]olding Nik Richie accountable for his users’ comments unambiguously violates federal law,” says Goldman by email. “The judge made a clearly wrong ruling on that point earlier in the case, and that mistaken ruling provides an important grounds for appeal. Second, Jones damaged her own reputation soon after the posts when she broke the law and had sex with her underage student.
