February 6, 200620 yr At times, this is how I feel: The public schools' idea of "fair" is public schools winning championships. The private schools' idea of "fair" is ensuring that all kids have the opportunity to attend and participate in extracurricular activities at their schools. If it is about the kids and their well being, why is it that certain "KIDS" get to do whatever they want and still get "The opportunity to participate" to me that is the worst thing possible. It sometimes makes me sick how everyone on here says that parents ofprivate schoolers send their kids to private schools because of the education and the discipline and the good values that the school teach's. From recent events and events in the pass it seems to me that it is ok to break the rules that the school clearly states as long as you play sports or important for a champ. This opportunity to play sports superceeds the education and discipline that the school stands for. And you forget, NO ONE IS SAYING THAT THEY CAN NOT GET A EDUCATION FROM A PRIVATE SCHOOL THEY JUST CANT PLAY SPORTS FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS. IF they come from another school or feeder system. To me public schools are saying education is what is important and not sports. You are saying it is unfair to tell a kid that he or she cant play sports but if you truly want a education here you can go you just cant play for two years, work on your education and self then you can play sports. IMP why private schools win champs, and publics dont is because the privates number one goal is sports where the public schools number one goal is education. Privates know the best way to make money is to get and keep their enrollment and get money from alum and the best way to do that in the american society is to win. And win in sports so they focus on that. Tell me what happens if the private schools KAT scores go down, do they they get restrictions, Oh I forget they dont have to take the test. Do they have to worry about all of their special ED kids making the grade, How do they handle BD kids, (if they even have any) kick them out if the act up (unless they are a star golfer or football player) how many kids do the private schools deal with that come from familys that are below the poverty line, (lets assume that they cant play "track" and live with a rich family that supports the kid, If they could not play "ball" would he be there and would that family be willing to house every poor kid that wants to go to that private school" My guess the private schools dont have to worry to much about that stuff or focus on educating that type of kid. I like to see how many kids come from famlies that make less then 18,000 a year. My guess not many but if the kid can play lets try to show that we care and say "come here and we will help you and then tell everyone look at us we care and try to help out these kids to make them better people. Want to impress me take in 270 kids in your schools (if your enrollment is 1800, that is 15 %, which even the High and mighty Male has) that are below the povety level and educate them know matter their abilites on or off the field. Dont say we give aid to everyone that wants it either and the only up to 50% line either. (I know for a fact of two kids that pay or have paid less then 50%. No matter what you say to me Privates are about the sports and the publics have to deal with and are more concerned with education. WE go by different rules but yet are excepted to play for the same title. I know we just whin because we dont win the champ. but come on lets get or head out of the sand and see that things arent the same between the schools. As for opportunity every HAS the right to an education in this county and and if the are more concerned about sports then I guess they will have to go to a school that feeds to where they want to go. As a parent I want mine to go for an education not I dont and wont worry about weither or not they can play sports or where the best sports are. Dont worry nothing is going to happen everything is going to be the same.

Dont worry nothing is going to happen everything is going to be the same. Do you have grade school aged children? My head is not in the sand at all. I believe in the total educational experience of children. I believe that sports teach values that can't be learned in the classroom. I believe that being a part of a team is as important in learning life lessons as studying for a test. I believe that children belong to no one but their families. I believe that families should be able to choose the best environment for their child, academically and athletically. I believe that a family that has limited means, but desires the environment a private school offers is entitled to financial aid. I believe that a private school's mission should be to offer the opportunity to attend their school to anyone who seeks to attend. I believe that it is the duty of the private school community to assist financially for those who cannot afford the entire cost. I believe that children who attend a school should be able to take full advantage of that school's extracurricular activities. I believe that a child who chooses a public school should be able to participate in that school's activities as well, and I believe that as a member of the "community at large" it is my duty to assist in financing education for all children, regardless of where I choose to send my children. I believe that there are many misperceptions with regard to financial aid, private schools reasons for success, and that too many people are unwilling to find the truth.

Would you dare to compare overall test scores public vs private? How many families are poor? Go to the inner city private schools. Quite a substantial number. Just like Holmes has more poor families than a Beechwood or Ryle. So does a Holy Cross over a Cov Cath. This is total disrespect o my family and many families I know. So the reason I was sent to a private school was athletics? The reason every generation of my family went to private schools was soley athletics? Its hard not to laugh at this post, then I realize your serious. This post and the ignorance in it, is the reason we are in this mess.
February 6, 200620 yr BR90, you are apparently not familiar with the mission of private high schools. Trinity offers 9 different levels of education. Trinity attempts to prepare the young men for life. The attendees come from 14 counties. Believe me, they are all not well to do financially. They are all not gifted in the classroom. They are presented the opportunity to succeed or fail. Some have learning disabilities. Most families make great financial sacrifices so their son(s) can attend. As far as not allowing their sons to play a sport for two years because they want or need a "different" learning experience is wrong. This is a civil liberties question that will be debated for years. Remember, this panel has already decided separation is wrong. They have agreed with the KHSAA Board of Control. Don't expect any changes soon as an almost new Board of Education takes office in May! They will have a few other pressing issues to discuss like future financing of the entire system and why Kentucky lags behind.

This post and the ignorance in it, is the reason we are in this mess. years ago and in your time that was true, private schools was set up for the poor but name one private school in the state of kentucky with at least 15% of their student body whose family is below the poverty line. or at least would be considered on free and reduced lunch as the public lingo would call it. NAme one. And the ignorance of your post to think that the people that make the policy about public school education dosent look at that stuff instead of "how can we make a champ." well think again. Well again you guys change gears and make it look like an attack. And for the "inner city Private schools" Name ONE INNER CITY PRIVATE SCHOOL BIG STUD In THE STATE OF KENTUCKY. ONLY ONE I KNEW OF SHUT DOWN YEARS AGO IN LOUISVILLE.(wonder why) If you read the post you will see that I never stated that every kid who went to private school was there because of sports which in one sentence you summed up the whole post into that BIG STUD and turned it into a battle cry for everyone out there who went to private school and was poor. YOU miss the boat BIG STUD. The point is there are kids that go to private schools that we all know are not wealthy and would be considered free and reduced lunch in public at least they were until the 8th grade but now go to at school that cost 8000.00 to go to, (and for all of you 50% people, that is the aid cant be more then 50%) so you are saying a kid who family has an income of say even 20,000. a year (note that is way above the actualy number to qualify) has and is able to put 4,000.00 a year 1/5 of the total familes income to send that one kid to private school. I THINK NOT. I DONT LIVE WITH SHADED GLASSES AND AM A REALIST. COME ON YOU GUYS ACTUALLY THINK THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO AFFORD $4000.00 a year. No. The thing that is getting the publics mad is the fact the the kids that they have had in their system all the way thought 8th grade and have tracked and who could not even pay for a two dallor feildtrip somehow ends up at a school that at half off would cost that family 4000.00 a year, OH YEA BY THE WAY THE KID CAN BALL. Where his best friend who went to the same school and lived in the same appartment complex who actualy had better grades but was not that good at ball only got 2000.00 in aid and there was no way possible for is family would be able to come up with the rest yet alone 1000 for just one kid. AND that is what gets it all out of wack, Public school takes the best friend even though they would love to get a great ball player they can only offer what they offer to every one student that wants to come to that public school. It is that 2% of the private school population that makes the sport field uneven. The private school already get the kids that work hard and are coachable and do what it takes, but their coaches know they need alittle extra something, not a lot just one or two postions that will put them over the top. They get them somehow someway. The perception is that they get them by shaded practices, TRUE or false who knows. But the fact is the public school has to take all kids which can create some real "nice atmosphere" in a school setting. Thus the public schools are too worried about the education that they have to give to each student know matter what or they will get in trouble because they are held accountable for EVERY KIDS education that walks in or out of that door. What happens when a kid gets kicked out of private school he always has a home in public and he will count against their test scores even though they were not the ones to educate him. Again private schools are blessed with more so, then not students who are hard workers and self motovated thus the privates can concertrate more to sports. Were as publics have to worry about that BD kid, or the kid that got kick out of the private school for drugs, and the very talented and the not so talented, they dont have time to focus on sports, why, as stated eariler the policy makes want public education to be accountable for all. Before all you say this or that, Remember I didnt say that the only thing Private schools worry about is sports or the dont care about education, and in the same sense I didnt say that the only thing that public schools worry about is education and not sports. IMO these two issues just have a diffent number of importance, which IMO creates a uneven field. Plus the fact I would like to see 15% of a private school enrollment be made up of kids that cant afford to go there and some can play sports but not all have to. That would make it easier to swallow then just 1 or 2 % that we know of that happen to be great at sports.

Well, to just make a short and sweet answer, you would apparently be surprised at the number of parents who work two jobs, and the number of students who work jobs, to pay the tuition. It's not as easy as looking at a spreadsheet to determine how a family manages to send their kids to private schools. I know of parents who've taken loans, and many more who've gone the extra job route. I also know parents who've sent their kids to public grade schools and middle schools, while setting aside money each year to afford private high school. As to some of your other rants...not all kids are "already disciplined". They're boys and girls, just like public school boys and girls. As to the number of inner-city private schools, you asked that someone name one...well, there's St. Francis right here at the corner of 3rd and Broadway. There's Portland Christian Academy, Presentation Academy, Mercy Academy (although Mercy will be moving out). Yes, they are smaller, but they are private schools. The private schools in Louisville are on the edges because that's where there was room for future expansion when they were created. Trinity has been in a real bind until recently, given their situation in St. Matthews. They've been able to alleviate some crunch by acquiring several business right by them, but it will always be difficult to continue expanding. (I guess you could say Trinity is an inner-city school....inner St. Matthews!) There are kids at the private schools who have been in trouble in their previous public school environment. Again, either way you go, it's about the family choosing the best environment for their child. That includes their child being happy in their school experience. There's more to school than books and tests. The lessons learned will carry them through college and life thereafter. There's no distinction between public and private in that matter. Penalizing kids 2 years, whether they're going to private or public schools is wrong. It does nothing at all to benefit the kids...any of them.

THis is what I mean, what is great Financial sacrifices" is it mom and dad work two jobs to send there son to school, or is it Who is dad and mom has no job yet alone three kids and the food card dosent give us enough so if the kid dosntr eat at school the kid doesnt eat. and tell me a parent that is in that situation would be able to pay 50% Yea right. And to say that Trinty Has 15% or even 1% of that " Financial Sacrifies" I doubt it. You are right the new BOE will not worry about sports and dont want to, so why not seperate and let it be done. By the way the different kinds of poor and financialy straped between the private and the public is totally two different things. I think it is funny that people try to compare the two. That is my point the Private schools should take in at least 15% of what would be considered free and reduced lunch kids not based on sports but if they happen to play sports great then the will get a taste of what a true "EQUAL Education "
February 6, 200620 yr By INNER CITY I was not looking for location but the number of students that attend there who's families are below the national poverty line. I bet none of those schools would even have 5% that would qualify. AGAIN you Hard times doesnt compare to public school hard times. and never will. that is the nature of the beast. That is ok, two different things .

That is ok, two different things . I wouldn't know, because that information is not available to me...and I'm glad, because that means that information is not available to others about me! But, I think you would be surprised. I guess the same questions could be asked of the income levels of students at Manual, Male, Ballard, Eastern....Really...
February 6, 200620 yr Private schools should take in at least 15% of what would be considered free and reduced lunch kids not based on sports but if they happen to play sports great then the will get a taste of what a true "EQUAL Education " That is a fantasy and you know it. If 15% of a private school's student body paid virtually no tuition, that school would go bankrupt. Unlike publics, privates don't have the luxury of taxation to pay teachers' salaries, retirements, healthcare, and other benefits. They don't have taxation to pay utilities, insurance, computer costs, etc.. The only way a private school could do this is if it had a HUGE endowment to supplement the school to make up for the 15% paying minimal or no tuition. Actually Trinity is currently working on building up its financial aid endowment. The goal is 10 million by 2010. While 10 million sounds like a large sum of money, 10 million will only generate about 1/2 million in income to supplement the school. 1/2 million divided by 7,800 (THS's tuition) is only 64 students or roughly 4.5% of Trinity's 1,400 student body. Far below your 15% quota. Trinity's financial aid endowment would have to be around 35 million to reach such a percentage. Trinity may reach that point some day but it will take several decades to reach that point. Let me guess, you know how they could do it?

I would say a majority of public schools in our state don't deal with 15% of its students below the national poverty line. So I have no clue why you are asking this question.
February 7, 200620 yr After reading this thread I believe that public schools spend less time on athletics and more time teaching their students the proper usage of paragraphs.
February 7, 200620 yr I know I am coming into this conversation late and I haven't read all of the posts(some have too much emotion). I think this issue comes down to mathematics. If "private" schools in general had a significant advantage then schools like Holy Cross (Covington) would or soon should be dominating. That hasn't happened and it doesn't appear that it is. Covington Catholic is another example. They should be able to whip the tar out of Highlands each year. They don't. This is just a numbers issue that could be fixed (while not easy) with one more class (5A) and place those schools with the true mathematical advantage in that class. This mathematical advantage wouldn't only be based totally on enrollment but also on drawing area. Also, if a school is able to draw out of their district (private included) then they need to "play up" to the next class or one that more closely resembles their "catchment area". Also, any school that would like to elect to "play up" (like Highlands wanted to when the 2A issue was raised) would be required to "play all the way up" to Class 5A. This has the potential to keep peace and it also would generate more revenue (1 more set of playoffs and state championship game). While it could end up close to the "at large & Louisville" set up from the past, it seems to me that it's the most reasonable alternative. To have rules where students are not able to participate is unbelievably short sighted and potentially further damages high school sports. Most would agree that if we could get more children into sports, we would for the betterment of society. There are plenty of smart people, that given the issues, could develop a system that addresses this sort of thing and ensure the rights of parents and students to choose and still be eligible for athletics at the same time.
