First Down - Yes or No?

Featured Replies

I was standing on the field inbetween the goal line and the 1 yard line to the play side; yes he made the first down. But oh well.

In case you have not heard Brent Curley broke his foot on the 6th offensive play of the game. He was not effective the rest of the game and was finally replaced a bit too late. Yes it was a first down but what else is new.

For the record, Graham Switzer, arguably Trinity's best returning defensive lineman, tore his ACL in the pre-season and missed the entire season. The "ROCKS" had many other key injuries during the season, as I'm sure x did also. My point is that injuries affected both teams. It's part of the game. Congrats to both teams a a great season!!!

Call the players back on the field, the replay offical just made a ruling. It was a first down. And the John Hardin lineman was really holding on their last TD and I'm calling coach Redmon right now.

You can not compare the loss of a DL before the season with the loss a QB after 6 plays. A QB who had not lost a game he started in in 2 years. A QB who led the team to 2 straight wins over Trinity and to a score on the only series he was healthy like it was a walk in the park.Trinity got the lucky break they needed.

It's funny that such exact measurements are made on such unexact ball and marker placement. We bring the chains out with such care to see if the nose of the ball is over the marker. Yet we forget that when the markers were placed on first down, the only precision for setting the markers was some guy eyeballing it from 20 yards away. Not to mention that the referee's placement of the ball is so subjective and is anything but precise.

^ Last time I watched #14 played more than 6 plays. Plus, assuming Trinity did need a lucky break to win, I would say the late hit on the intercepted pass was it.... assuming that was luck and not bad judgement by a defensive player. Lots of assuming going on here.... P.S. I guess the park closed at 8PM

And the excuses just keep on coming. I love it. I get a big chuckle every time I read one.

Graham was a much better player at his position his junior year than Curley. Curley was a good quarterback but not a great one. Switzer was a great defensive lineman before his injury and had many D-1 scouts looking at him. He could totally dominate a game. Every team ran away from him. His injury may or may not end his college chance at playing. I will agree with you that loosing Curley hurt, but don't try and say that a healthy Switzer would not have mattered.

Thats funny, I could swear I saw 14 playing QB well into the second half. Also, before the game we were all told to "fear" Vic getting a number of reps at QB. Glaser said we would see him line up at QB and that they had worked on it in practice. What happened? Vic took a few snaps, was ineffective and Zoeller took over and was equally ineffective. I think the problem was more coaching than anything else. X tried to throw the ball when it wasn't there. Curley was as guilty of this as Zoeller. As far as Brent's "walks in the park", I'll bet he will forever remember the one that got away his senior year (those tend to stick with you) and the fact that for all his wins he finished by losing to the Rocks when it mattered.

The thread is "First Down Yes or No". Since the picture shows his helmut down 6 inches from the goal line, and considering how he is shown cradling the ball in post #1, and he only needed to get to the 1 yd line for 1st down, the answer is YES. As they say "Pictures are worth a 1000 words"; regardless of opinions.

I do not see how anyone can look at a picture from this angle and determine where the BALL was at the time his forward progress stopped and or his knee came in contact with the ground. Regardless, I cannot believe I read and posted a response to this thread.

There's no need to take a shot at Curley like that. He tried to play through injury, and was a heck of a decision maker his entire starting career.

Curley didn't lose that game for X, and it's unfair to paint it that way.

What a stupid thread, anyway.
