“The only place that success comes before work is in the dictionary.”

- Vince Lombardi.

"Son, act like you've been there before". Paul Brown.

Well, here is a quote from a guy who was once a football coach (although he made this particular comment long after he left the coaching ranks and after becoming an NFL owner): "Just win, baby," by Al Davis. I can't say I agree with this philosophy from a moral standpoint, but I do think that this quote accurately sums up the current mindset and outlook associated with big-time football.

"Son, act like you've been there before". Paul Brown.

One of my Paul Brown favorites is one he used every year in his team address to his players at the start of training camp. It went something like this.

"You are all important. Not one of you is necessary."

"I wouldn't ever set out to hurt anyone deliberately unless it was, you know, important -like a league game or something."

- Dick Butkus

"We are much better team than our record showed this year". - Rod Marinelli, head coach of the Detroit Lions who finished the 2008 season with a record of 0-16. Go figure.

John McKay head coach of the Tampa Bay Bucs - a reporter asked what he thought of his team's execution to which he replied "I'm in favor of it"

Nothing is work unless you'd rather be doing something else - George Halas

Here are two of my favorite quotes by football coaches.

1. John Madden - "Don't worry about the horse being blind, just load the wagon."

2. Bear Bryant - "If I could coach all my games on Monday, I would never lose a one."

Bum Phillips

referring to Don Shula, coach of the Miami Dolphins "He can take his'n and beat your'n and take your'n and beat his'n."

referring to Houston Oilers quarterback Warren Moon) "That boy could throw a football through a car wash and not get it wet."

(when asked about Oilers RB Earl Campbell's inability to finish a 1 mile run in training camp) "When it's first and a mile, I won't give it to him."

of Earl Campbell, "I don't know if he's in a class by himself, but whatever class he's in, it don't take long to call the roll."

Don Shula

It's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog.

Dan Marino

Sure, the home-field is an advantage -- but so is having a lot of talent.

“We didn't have steroids. If I wanted to get pumped up, I drank a case of beer.” -Art Donovan

"He couldn't spell cat if you spotted him the C and the T. - Hollywood Henderson, on Terry Bradshaw

"I may be dumb, but I'm not stupid." - Terry Bradshaw
