Girl with Down Syndrome Not Allowed on Cheer Squad

Featured Replies

Football, by the way, is a horrible example because it isn't a cut sport like cheerleading.

Since when do football players not get cut?

100% agree with not letting her on the team.

100% disagree with not letting her be a part of the team in some manner, like manager or mascot.

Along this line of thought, just like the football team has ball boys why can't the cheer team have a cheer girl? She could come to practice and help out with something/anything. And she could be a special assistant to the coach and team on game nights.

All I am saying here is if I was in charge at that school before the lawyers got involved I would have sat down with the cheerleading powers that be to see if we/they could come up with something here that would satisfy everyone.

Some teams cut players.

Basketball had an autistic kid hit some threes one game, they are a cut sport.

You can have 500 cheerleaders if you want, all dont have to be a comp squad, but there is no limit on # of girls you can have.

It could also be the cheer coach is some snobby nose uppity up who dont want to have to deal with her. Or maybe not. But no reason not to find her a spot doing something.

I too agree with Rams post. No harm in allowing her to be a team manager, not taking any ones place on the squad.

I spoke to soon before I read it all. If she is a manager or honorary cheerleader in some capacity, I can agree with that.

Ram, should they just allow anyone who can't make the squad be an "honorary cheerleader" or a "cheer manager"?
Did you disagree with Teddy Kremer, being an honorary Reds Bat Boy too?

Cheer Squads and Dance Teams are just one step above toddler beauty contest in the way parents and coaches act.

What happens if they allow her to be an "honorary cheerleader" and, heaven forbid, she gets hurt? The fact they've already hired a lawyer leads me to believe it'd be a lawsuit waiting to happen.

You talk with the parents beforehand and lay out what she can and can't do, and they sign it.

I've never heard of it at the high school level.

Who cuts football players? If they do, they're doing it wrong. Only reason I could see doing that is because you have too many kids and not enough numbers,,,which means 100+ kids.

And likely got zero complaints. Point proven.

Cincy St X doesn't cut kids. They just get duplicate numbers.

I'm not aware of any HS teams that cut kids in football. Makes no sense.

I didn't know that and/or don't remember.

Any chance you could start a thread about that in the football forum?
