My only guess would be to see if the rest of the contract was valid. I mean, if there was one mistake made, perhaps there were others.

Wouldn't it be incredibly naive to assume any professional athlete handles these matters himself and would just write a check? I am guessing, but I assume the first two people he would call would be his agent and attorney. It could just be poorly written. He probably had to talk to all three about the situation anyways, and they all told him he could legally keep it. My only guess would be to see if the rest of the contract was valid. I mean, if there was one mistake made, perhaps there were others.Right. I know if it were me in that situation, I would want to let them know that I think there is a problem, ask them to review the contract to confirm it, and then ask them what do we need to do to correct it. Even if I thought I was 100% correct, there is no way I could make a contract move like that without some advise and assistance from those who I retain to do that for me.

So, maybe when he finally looked at the contract/paycheck, that he realized what it included wasn't what he had agreed to, in fact it was too much? Then all the lawyers said, well, it's in the contract now...it's yours to keep.

May 16, 201313 yr My favorite story on an athlete and checks is the Ricky Henderson one. For those who aren't familiar ... Ricky received a $1 million bonus check from the A's. A couple months went by and one of the front office people called Ricky to see if he got the check because it did not clear the bank. Ricky said yes, Rickey was proud of it, framed it and put it on the wall at home. :lol2: The A's told him to make a copy of it for framing and please cash the real one so they could balance their books. Ricky also once held onto a bonus check from the Yankees because he was "waiting for money market rates to go up".
