Gov't obtains wide AP phone records in probe

Featured Replies

In a letter of protest sent to Attorney General Eric Holder on Monday, AP President and Chief Executive Officer Gary Pruitt said the government sought and obtained information far beyond anything that could be justified by any specific investigation. He demanded the return of the phone records and destruction of all copies.

"There can be no possible justification for such an overbroad collection of the telephone communications of The Associated Press and its reporters. These records potentially reveal communications with confidential sources across all of the newsgathering activities undertaken by the AP during a two-month period, provide a road map to AP's newsgathering operations and disclose information about AP's activities and operations that the government has no conceivable right to know," Pruitt said.

Gov't obtains wide AP phone records in probe

I posted a link to this story in the IRS targeting conservatives thread as an example of more white house intrusion on the peoples rights but it definitely deserves it's own thread.. Can't believe Holder is stupid enough to attack the very folks who have been protecting his butt the last few years.. Lets hope he makes them mad enough to actually do some real, truthful reporting on his corrupt justice dept....

I heard about this last night, and all I can say is WOW!

I can see getting to the source of a leak of classified information, but there are better ways of going about it.

Folks, I've been complaining about govt intrusion and rights violations since 2004 when the Bush administration forced ISPs to turn over info.

Wow! Seems like the stories get more disturbing day by day.

And last week when it was said they don't need a warrant to look at your emails and such things as Facebook PRIVATE messages.

I quoted it then and I'll quote it now, "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

Maybe now the media will stop protecting this administration. This is absurd, Benghazi, secret service, IRS, now tapping AP writers and reporters. Even liberals better watch out. Even Hitler and Stalin killed their own supporters.

Who investigates the FBI if the Att. General is guilty.

Sounds like a case of The Patriot Act run rampant.

Let me get this straight. Admin sets sight 2nd amendment OK. Admin sets sight of 1st amendment panties in a wad. Maybe, just maybe the mainstream media will get over their sycophantic tendencies with this administration.

I think I sort of predicted this type of reaction in one of the gun control threads.

In AP surveillance case, the real scandal is what?s legal

I think this article's title is misleading, but I hope a case like this will bring to the public's attention the erosion of the Fourth Amendment. We shouldn't tolerate such abuse, even if "terrorism" or "security" is invoked.

Read an interesting statement...

The erosion of the entire Bill of Rights by this administration and others is very disturbing.....THEY ARE ALL THERE FOR A REASON!!!!!!!!!!!
