Zero Tolerance....It's Come To This

“A pencil is a weapon when it is pointed at someone in a threatening way and gun noises are made,” said Bethanne Bradshaw, a spokesperson for Suffolk Public Schools.

Really? I'll agree if a student is trying to stab another student with a pencil, it's a weapon. In this case, that's not what happened. The kid pointed a pencil and made machine gun noises and that, in her "brilliant" mind, makes it a weapon. How much more of this kind of moronic insanity are we willing to put up with?

Please don't use her "logic" that some children consider it threatening, who are scared about shootings in schools or shootings in the community or kids don’t think about ‘Cowboys and Indians’ anymore, they think about drive-by shootings and murders and everything they see on television news every day because that simply isn't logical. First of all, why are parent's letting kids watch the news about school shootings if they can't handle something as horrific as that? Secondly, it's just natural for kids to point a stick, pencil or what ever and pretend it's a gun, I'd bet just about everyone on here has done that (at least all of the men) when we were kids. Third, pretend machine gun sounds don't make anything a weapon, common sense needs to come into play at some point. Lastly, I think people like Bethanne Bradshaw do a lot more harm to children overall than a 7 year old pointing a pencil and making machine gun sounds. This is worse than overreaction, this is getting to the point of insanity.

She should be fired on the spot. Clearly isn't competent enough to do her job.

It is so frustrating, that our society has come to where kids cannot be kids. I understand the safety factors in schools, but she is way overboard.

This is getting out of control. Who will protect our children from moronic adults.

Just think what damage could have been done if the kid had a magic marker. Probably put on death row for that.

Thanks you bunch of liberals for helping the demise of society and childhood.

It amazes me that such illogical thinking as hers is being pushed on children. No way I would want this kind of mindset teaching a child or grandchild of mine. She is a perfect example of how the anti-gun crowd are fueled by emotion rather than common sense and logic.

My issue with zero tolerance is that we have lost the ability to look at each situation and make a decision based on the facts of that situation. All situations are not equal and therefore need to be treated appropriately!!!

Perfectly stated. Zero tolerance policies are generally awful.

Wouldn't the appropriate approach be to tell the kid that playing with fake guns at school isn't a joke and move on with your day? What good does a suspension do? Give him more batting practice in the backyard?

This gal would have had a conniption fit, if she'd seen my, soon to be, step-grandchild decked out in his Scottish garb and wielding a plastic battle axe last Sunday out at the park.

Zero tolerance policies were born due to administrators, authorities, etc, not having the guts to make decisions, period.

In defense of school administrators, I guess...

They exist because, in so many instances, school teachers and administrators get used as tools and pawns by politicians, media, local activist groups and everything in between. You couldn't pay me enough to be a school administrator; that job seems horrible.

I can assure you they are fairly compensated.

Most of us have zero tolerance for zero tolerance.:)

I won't even blame liberals....just stupidity.
