Gilbert had 40 points and 14 rebounds, this was in about 26 minutes of play as he was in foul trouble with 3 fouls in the first half. Dixon is good and in my opinion the second best in the reigion, but to be honest I still this he is a step ahead of Dixon. And that is not taking anything away from Dixon, becuase he is a great kid and a player.

I don't know about that. Estill County was in the 10th region region last year and Dixon still put up high numbers. They defeated Clark County in the district and made it to the region. And the thing about Gilbert is he's a big guard who is hard to defend, and when he gets on a roll, he may hit 4 or 5 straight threes. Even Mike Fields of the Lexington Herald-Leader saw him in a game earlier this season and wrote in one of his Friday pieces that he was impressed with Gilbert. He's hard to stop...he scored 42 and 29 against us this year. He's made a lot of improvements in his game since last year.

Glbert and Dixon are definitely two very good players.

Wolfe played a moderately successful half-court press- trap, forcing probably 20 Estill turnovers. When Estill beat the press they often scored layups. In half court defense Wolfe left huge gaps for penetration and easy shots. Dixon grabbed lots of offensive boards and helped overcome the press. Wolfe just seemed out of position on defense, just like the Buckhorn game in the All A.

 

Since it was so easy to score against the Wolves, Estill kind of threw their defense out the window too. Stamper of Wolfe had a way off shooting night. Crowe fumbled the ball a lot for some reason and Gilbert eliminated himself from Wolfe's defense by committing 2 early fouls. If anyone penetrated near him he jumped out of the way to avoid a foul. Neither team was very patient in their shot selection, although Estill did run some clock doing a modified 3-man weave a couple of times.

 

At the start of the game Wolfe posted Gilbert and just lobbed it to him for 5 straight automatic baskets with Dixon defending. I think the score was 14 to 4 (Wolfe) when Gilbert picked up his second foul. By the end of the first quarter, with Gilbert out, Estill had reclaimed the lead. Gilbert never really went back to the post position when he returned. Gilbert and Stamper were shooting looong threes with little success. Estill probably missed 10 free throws down the stretch or they would have scored well over 100.

 

This was much more a playgound type game than a game of strategy. I don't think that things would have been played much different if the coaches had stayed at home.

I would agree with that. Dixon is really a smart player and I think that he controlled the game more than Gilbert did. I didn't really mean to knock Estill in saying that they 'threw their defense out', but when a team can score without running offensive sets and the other team is just jacking up shots from everywhere then I guess that happens. I'm sure that the 2 starters being out caused some of those turnovers.

It is hard for a player to control a game when they sit most of a half on the bench. But I agree Dixon is a great player and had a good game last night. He is definenetly in the top players in the region.

One guard, one forward - Reese really helps bring the ball up and throw over the press - he was missed.

Puckett is a great defender and presents matchup problems. He was missed as an extra defender on Gilbert and extra offense.

Wolfe is giving up a lot of points here lately. What kind of defense are they playing, or better yet, how are thier players lining up when they don't have the ball.
