I would also point out that city governments in NKY routinely throw out the lowest bid and instead go with a slightly higher bid based on that company's performance in years past, reputation for quality, etc.

It's not the governments place to level the playing field in this instance. The union can do that by not requiring an apprenticeship program. They need to look internally at ways to cut cost so they are more competitive.

Believe it or not, there are tradesman who pay to put themselves through trade schools and apprenticeship programs. I have a couple friends who are welders who paid there own way through their welding classes - not their employers. I have a friend who is a master mechanic who has never worked a day with the UAW. I made my way into company management by paying my own way through college...working at a law firm 40 hours a week, and then taking college night classes. I didn't have to rise up through the union ranks to get into a management position - I paid my dues in college instead, just like my friends paid their dues in their vocational programs.

 

If you want to join a union and take advantage of the apprenticeship programs that they have...well great, go right ahead. But why the hell do unions think they deserve preferred status in order to get jobs because their services cost more than the open shops?

 

 

 

Incorrect. The cost of my "training" was paid by me. I wasn't even employed in the construction industry when I went to college. The cost of my college education has never been put back on the purchasers of my construction services.

 

Sure it has been passed on. I am guessing, you make more money than some one without the construction management degree that has zero experience coming out of school compared to Joe Blow from the street.

Serious question why should the government be creating an advantage for Union companies? I have no problem if a Union company wins the contract with the best offer. But why should the government create an obvious disadvantage for non-union companies? How is that good for anyone but the Union itself?

 

One thing is that most union shops require something like 3 or 4 apprentices for every journeyman on each job. This is one way that they try to compete with open shops that only use journeyman or journeyman and "helpers."

Leveling the playing field...by forcing the public to spend more money so unions don't have to struggle to compete against open shops. Great plan for a city that's broke as a joke.

 

Or you are a little upset that they are making it harder for you to milk money out of government projects like the Fay apartment renovations.

Only unions or a combination of both unions and management? There are multiple companies that function properly with unions in place. Some are even Fortune 500 companies. It can be done. I've seen it.

Funny how when unions come out smelling like a rose they are evil and unfair and the reason the country is broke but when unions are affected negatively then that's what they get. It's sad really. I see both sides of the issue and work my butt off to maintain a good relationship with management AND union employees AND the international officers that are over my head. It's a never ending balancing act with no true winner and at the end of the day the health of the company should be everyone's top priority.

Or in Cincy's case , a 1/4 million bucks that could save the layoff of union police and fireman. I'm NOT totally anti union . My bro is a retired boilermaker . I know TONS of good ole boy union guys who live in eastern ky . Good guys . No doubt about it . But there are times where they only look out for their good and screw anyone that dares question it or get in their way .

Who is supposed to train these tradesman to be journeyman? To become a journeyman an apprentice has to document how many hours worked and then have formal classroom training in most cases. So, how does one become a journeyman if the contractors are not hiring and training journeyman? We here all the time about the shortage of skilled labor, maybe this is why?

The bolded is very true but that goes both ways. There are some people who are in high roles in management that are so anti-union that they look to screw the union every chance they get as well.
