What is the KHSAA rule about holding back 8th graders? Not just in basketball but all sports.

I don't believe there is a KHSAA rule on this. I never heard of one if there is.

Sec. 1) Age Restriction

Pursuant to KRS 156.070 (2) (e), a student who becomes nineteen

(19) years old before August 1 shall be ineligible for interscholastic

athletic competition. A student who becomes nineteen (19) on or

after August 1 shall remain eligible for the entire school year.

 

There is a provision to get a waiver. Only age restriction I'm aware of.

Be careful. Once a school "promotes" or "passes an 8th grader the 4-year clock starts. So if Johnny passes 8th grade but the parent decides to hold him back his first year of his 4 would be that repeated 8th grade year. Scott County people can tell you about this. A kid named Rodney Haddix was promoted but his parents had him repeat the 8th grade at a different school. His KHSAA eligibility ran out after his 11th grade year and he was forced to go to a prep school in Las Vegas.

You are correct you can not play high school (9-V) during the hold back season. You can play 8th grade if your school allows it, but not high school. Your 4 year clock still will not start until the player has been promoted to 9th grade.

 

I'm not sure about practice.

KHSAA just took over the Middle Schools as well so all rules will be changed I am sure.

That is true, and so is this, If a player plays basketball, for instance, and plays varsity as an 8th grader. Even if he is not promoted to the 9th grade, he cannot repeat the grade and play varsity basketball again as an 8th grader. See Bill Walker/Rose Hill on this one.

To be clear if you are promoted from 8th but decide to repeat 8th your clock starts immediately.BYLAW 4. ENROLLMENT YLAW 4. ENROL MENT

shall have four (4) consecutive calendar years of eligibility from

the date of fi rst promotion by the school provided the student

I'm truly ignorant about these rules, but I know for a fact a kid in NKY repeated the 8th grade last year, competed on the 9th grade team, went to 9th grade this year and played on the 9th grade team there. Now, he had to transfer schools in order to repeat 8th grade, but that was the situation. I can't see anyone wanting to break any rules there, and it seemed harmless to me, but does that constitute a violation? Who suffers from it? The child?

If he didn't fail 8th grade the first time through then by rule his eligibility will expire after his junior year.
