The wishbone works just fine and yes you can win with it. I have no idea what style they are running. The style in part will determine line splits. If they are a triple team then you'll see larger splits to move the hand off and read keys out. If it is more of a power style you'll see some of the tighter splits. Those tighter splits make it tough on the defense because they tend to just get in each other's way. Makes it tough to blitz also.

 

As far as the whole 9 in the box thing never has bothered me. I think the box count is one of the more overated things. It takes more than just bodies to stop the run. Those kids better want to stick their nose in there over and over. You put 9 guys up there to sell out you better hope those 2 safeties or your CBs don't fall alseep.

That's the one. I found it a little off the beaten path, but he has some points about clock management. One point he was completely accurate on, many coaches do not properly manage the clock.

Reed has a whole book on clock management but its hard to find. The guy is a little nuts.

 

We are going to run tbe double wing this year. In the past we have been power I, I, sinlge wing and TFS. I've coached in a few systems. I was lucky enough to play for a great triple option coach. Love the option.

 

There is a great wishbone team in Ga that came from VI. I'll look them up. One of the best bone teams I've watched.

Yeah lochness gets all fired up when people start telling him you can't run against those 9 man fronts. We are so thin this coming year I am going to make all our RB get up like they are Jim Brown lol. It will be interesting to see as a state if we start seeing some of these "old school" offenses come back.

They will in time. Football is like fashion.

 

However, I think it will take seeing it on Saturday's and Sunday's for old school stuff to become more mainstream, but that's natural.

 

Afterall, most eat and drink the foods we see on TV. We use banks that we see on TV...the same with the clothes we buy and the stores we shop at.

 

Lord knows we have talked about this before, but I'm a fan of it all and Birdseye hit on it again, but winning the Dinner table is the biggest key (well, and having players, lets not kid ourselves. lol)

I believe you can run any offense against any team and be successful. But you have to have a good scheme. You have to keep the defense guessing. It also helps that you have some Jimmy's and Joe's.

 

Here is what folks forget about high school football. Kids on the field range from 14-17 years of age. So every play there will be missed assignments.

 

If the defense did evrything correct on every play and the offense did everything correct on every play then football would be a boring sport, because the football would never move.

 

So yes Ashland can be successful running the wishbone attack.

No, they will never compete for a state title running the wishbone. Maybe the region if their talent is strong, but not state.

1. Can Ashland succeed with the Wishbone with a new OL?

2. Will Ashland be able to succeed against Highlands and CovCath going to a more one dimensional offense?

What I want to know is why? Why is coach love choosing the wishbone? That will determine the amount of its success.

Does he know it inside and out, every adjustment, every technique, the ins and outs of calling the game in it? If the answer is yes he can win.

Does it fit the current and future personnel at Ashland High School? If the answer is yes to both he can win.

If it is being done to be Macho, old school, or just because I said so, then no it will not win.
