No. Play was at first. As Bluespecter said, there wasn't even contact between Conley & the Jackets' 1B. She would have been out, but the 1B dropped the ball. Ump called her safe & then Bretz came out screaming like mad.

Emma slid and the girl dropped the ball. No contact between the two. Umpires called her safe and Nicholas county coach went bonkers screaming that it was illegal. The umpires conferenced with each other and the coach is still going crazy. Bracken coaches argued it but to no avail. The home plate umpire put his arm around Emma who was also visibly upset and escorted her back to the dugout and all the while explaining that what she did was illegal and it was in the rule book. Glad class a regional means enough for them to send us the very best umpires they have. What a joke.

 

Oh the Class A regional...geez can we do away with this thing in every sport. Just causes more drama than it is worth...

Sorry...but I disagree. The problem isn't the Class A tournament; the problem is the incompetent officials that the assigning secretary sends to officiate. For my kids who work hard knowing that they have a legit chance of going to small school state tourney, having officials who don't even know the rules is a kick in the teeth. How ridiculous that the umpire puts his arm around a 17 yr old to escort her back to the dugout to explain how she broke a rule that doesn't even exist.....and you know what she interpreted his speech to her as..."I'm not a rookie ump but I'm gonna let this coach cheat and agree with him bc he's yelling really loud so he must b right bc I'm an idiot."

 

Granted that Bracken should have never been it that position to begin with bc of their errors but this play was a game changer and who knows how things would've ended up if the umpires actually knew the rules.

Being the Class A regional has no bearing on this. Simple fact is that the umpires involved didn't know the rules. There's no excuse for that IMO.

I can't speak to the Gallatin/Carroll issues. But Lawnboy has stated instances in which he has seen umpires struggling with knowledge of the rules. I've had a couple of people tell me something similar. I wouldn't call it a widespread problem, but it's certainly a problem & the cause of significant amounts of drama.

 

Other drama, on the other hand, has always existed & will always exist. This particular issue in the BC/NC game is solely on the umpires involved.

 

I do want to stress my belief that Nicholas County deserved the victory. They brought their gloves, for the most part, and Bracken County did not. It's just a shame that a couple of paid umpires are this aloof when it comes to the rules.

I was told by the 16th region assigning umpire that if a girl slides into 1st base she must use the orange portion of the bag.

 

Softball does have one major difference from baseball and that difference is in the first base bag. In softball they use what is called a safety base or double base. This base is twice the size of a regular base and it is colored half white and half orange. The bag is on both sides of the first base line. The orange color is in what would be considered out of bounds and the white part of the bag is in the field of play. Its purpose is to give the runner a place to step when running to first base, without the risk of stepping on the foot of or colliding with the first baseman. After the runner is safely on first base the orange part of the base is no longer safe and if the runner is standing on the orange part of the bag and is tagged with the ball, they will be called out. The only time the runner or a defensive player can use the orange or white part of the first base bag after the runner is already safely on base is on any live ball play that is made from foul territory on the first base side of the field.

^ Most of the girls seem to use the orange portion of the base, but I can't say with 100% certainty that Emma used it. But I also know the objection from Coach Bretz was simply that she slid head first.

Ledger Independent mentioned in their article regarding the Nicholas/Bracken game that this was a new rule???
