My rule book is in the mail thanks to the KHSAA, in hopes that we do not have this happen again. Our girls work very hard and it is our job to stand behind them!!!

I am glad he admitted his mistake, but a rule book should never be on the field in my opinion.

Here is an excerpt from a Ledger-Independent article that touches on the incident at hand in this thread. This was just posted on the Ledger's website tonight:

 

•After witnessing a blown call that may have directly affected the outcome of Saturday's 10th Region All "A" Classic championship game, I was just wondering why the KHSAA doesn't implement a rule stating that the umpires be required to have a rules book with them during games. The umps ruled Bracken County's Emma Conley out after she slid headfirst into first base because Nicholas County coach Barry Bretz convinced them that it was an illegal slide.

 

They couldn't have been more wrong and with the Lady Jackets clinging to a two-run lead in the seventh inning, we will never know if the Lady Bears would've been able to rally for the victory. They were certainly in excellent position to do just that after Jordan Wills hit her second double of the game to deep left-center field, a hit that would have easily brought the speedy Conley home with the third run. Wills would have represented the tying run with no outs in the inning and Bracken with an excellent opportunity to at least tie the game and send it into extra innings.

 

In fairness to the game's home plate umpire, Tim Hornsby, he admitted his error before Tuesday's St. Patrick-Calvary Christian game and said he doesn't blame the loyal Lady Bears supporters for being upset with the missed call, all the more reason umpires and coaches alike should have a rule book in their possession at all times during a game.

Umpires who don't know the rules shouldn't be on the field

 

As far as that goes...coaches who cheat their way to a victory shouldn't be there either.

I totally agree about the umpires and coaches can do whatever they can sleep with at nights and what they want their kids to learn from them.

But any decent official would never allow any coach, player, or fan onto the field with a rule book in hand to try to prove them wrong.

That ump is crazy for over turning anything just because someone said it was wrong. If you don't know you can't call it.

Maybe I can shed some light..Coach Bretz wasn't arguing the fact that she slid head first.. His complaint was she slid at the white bag instead of the safety bag which is what they have to use in softball and there was some contact on the slide at the white bag.. So by rule the right call was made..

This thread is on the 4th page and you are the only one who has made this statement. Were you there? Bc others claim that they were there and sure seem to have a different opinon than you.

I wasn't privy to the conversation Bretz had with the umpires, but when he came out of the dugout, he said nothing about sliding into a particular bag. He only mentioned that she slid.

 

Additionally, Tim Hornsby (the plate umpire for the game) apologized later for making a mistake with the call.

No that is not what the coach was arguing. He was yelling that she violated the new no slide rule by sliding head first. I was there and everyone within a two mile radius could hear him screaming about it. His argument had nothing at all to do with the base she used but it was the head first slide itself. I was paying very close attention because it was my kid getting a raw deal. Enough was already fabricated at that game...there's no need to make up things to make the coach look better now. It was all about the head first slide. NOTHING about the bags were mentioned at all.....and the guy was screaming loud enough for us all to hear.
