If B'ville could knock off South why not Pineville also? They have played as tough of schedule as B'ville for the most part, and both their games have gone down to the wire. IMO neither can get close to South, Clay in the region at Clay may be the best shot for an upset.

Way too much has to go right for B-ville to pull off such an upset. Like, they would have to blister the nets the way Villanova did to Georgetown in '85, and South would have to have a subpar game to boot.

Or South would have to have alot of fouls called on them and Bville shoot 40 free throws, which may come to pass when the region rolls around. Never say never guys. South is the favorite, but as everyone knows on a given night any team can win.

Were this scenario to play out — with "a lot of fouls called" on South — it would be a travesty of the highest order, because that would indicate that shady dealings were going on.

 

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Any 13th Region team to beat SL will have to have a lot of extra help from people not playing or coaching to do it. But if these 13th Region schools are fine with a tainted win, by all means, cheat to your heart's desire, because that's what it will take. The talent differential between SL and the rest is that great.

I have seen many a talented team have an off night and the weaker opponent get a break or two and pull off the upset. I was not implying that anyone would cheat South. They are pretty physical and handsy on defense. If the game is called tight it would work against a team like South and in the favor of a team like Barbourville. 15th region officals are calling the 13th this year so who knows how they will let them play. I can promise it will be entertaining.

Why would calling it tight not work more against Barbourville, who has nowhere near the depth SL has?

 

And let's approach this from a different angle: Who has Barbourville played to prepare them for what they would see against SL? Sure, some minor leaguers can hit major league pitching, but the overwhelming majority can't. And Barbourville -- by comparison to SL -- plays a minor league schedule.

 

Once again, too many things have to go right for Barbourville and wrong for SL, and the chances of the planets aligning properly that night are very, very slim.

I would agree..... North because they are a rival....... Clay because the region is at their place and they could be the team to get a few "iffy" calls. However, I dont see either of these scenarios playing out and I dont see SL getting beat by any team in this region unless they:

a) get completely cheated

b) bring their "C" game the same night their opponent brings their "A+" game.

I agree with you, South could lose to Barbourville or 2-3 others without getting cheated. If the 15th region refs do not allow hand checking, reaching, back-tapping, etc., it will hurt South Laurel more than any other 13th region team that I have seen this year. Barbourville has the size to match up with South Laurel and they have five very dangerous outside shooters who could create holes in South's zone defense. All it would take is a very good shooting night along with limited turnovers and Barbourville would be right in the game in my opinion.

 

Clay Co. is another team with a shot because of their strong inside game that would force South to rely more on the perimeter than they would like, especially if Clay can take care of the ball preventing easy baskets.

 

If you can limit South's points off of turnovers amd turn them into a half-court team, they are still very good, but not unbeatable compared to the rest of the region.

No one is saying that it would take a team "cheating" SL in order for them to get beat. I think most people are saying that it would take 1 of 2 possible scenarios to be carried out in order for SL to get beat in the 13th region.

 

#1 SL plays very poorly, and their opponent plays the best game of their season

 

#2 SL gets cheated so horribly bad that its obvious from both sides

 

Any number of teams have a chance of playing with, or beating, SL if one of these 2 things happen. Barbourville, NL, Clay, and maybe Corbin all have a legit chance if one of these scenarios gets played out.

Not sure what Barbourville's starting lineup and sixth man go, but I'm fairly sure it isnt that big. Dont even mention that Barbourville cannot match SL athletically.

 

Clay Co. has a nice inside game...... but it doesnt match up with SL's tandem of Walt Allen and Trey Smith. Both who are playing extremely well as of late. Also, dont mention the fact that SL"s perimeter game is as good as any in the state. All 5 starting players are a danger from three land. I dont think forcing SL to their perimeter game is neccessarily a bad thing. That is why they are so dangerous... great inside game, great perimeter game.

 

Both of these teams have good teams and could pull the upset. But when you look at the whole story....... its very very very very unlikely, even when you consider your arguments for why and how it might happen.

 

Also....... SL does NOT hand check, reach in, back tap, and so on and so forth...... but they do play GREAT DEFENSE. If the refs arent calling the fouls, and most of them dont, then its not a foul.

It doesn't make sense to me, to say that a team CAN beat SL, but to say that they WILL NOT, and state it as if it's a fact. I agree with you, that it is highly, highly unlikely, but I don't agree with saying No, as if it is a definite answer, without any other possible outcome. It just doesn't make sense. And we've all seen teams throughout HS, College, and Pro Sports lose to far inferior teams. It just happens every now and then, without any cheating.
